As far as I know Microsoft has said you "need" a valid Windows 7 or 8.1 License to get the free upgrade. I haven't seen them say you actually give up that license, or that its consumed in the process. It's been "reported" that that will happen, and that's been repeated here numerous times. Doesn't mean its true though. Some seem to think if something is repeated often enough it must be fact. I'll believe it when I see it.

I think of this as a key transfer. You'll use the same key for both Win10/Win8.1 or Win10/Win7. Both OS's will be able to use the same key.

I've done two upgrade installs, one from Windows 7 and one from Windows 8.1. Each time Windows 10 got a new different key tied to it. showkey showed the original key and a different key being used by Windows 10.

I was referring to the final release not the preview.

Just curious have you tried the leak build and does it do the same thing?

My understanding, from many posts ago, is that MS cannot alter the embedded UEFI key. Hence, MS supplied 10 key will activate RTM and OEM key will remain in Bios. Seems to imply 10 stands alone with new validated key from MS and OEM key valid for OEM OS-whatever. just IMO.

    yes, and yes.

As a matter of fact, I built a "Windows-to-go" on a thumb from 10174, entered the key that was floating around, and all was fine. Pulled the the thumb and booted back into 8.1, then 10.

Ok, but I'm going to update to the RTM from the Preview. I already upgraded from a qualifying OS to the Preview. If Windows 10 is going to use my old 7 or 8.1 key why did I get new ones on the upgrade? See what I'm saying?

So what will happen if I have a retail Win 7 dvd not an OEM one. I've changed most every bit of hardware in my PC since I built it and never had to reactivate it over the phone.
Guess it will be interesting to see what happens with Windows 10.

I see.. My plan is to go from Win8.1 to Win10 so I suspect they will use my existing Win8.1 key. But time will tell on what really occurs.
