The editors must have missed that sentence
The communications from MS re: RTM & Insiders Program is just a mess. I expect that nothing much will change in the end.
The one year off for a free upgrade to win10 for a qualifying OS will be the defacto standard (it might be extended but one year seems to be more than fair)
The Insider program will be as it always has been ... you install a base and it gets updated as development releases new versions to test. Of course the RTM release is part of that testing, but a month later, your machine might be on 10.1.034 (whatever the versioning makes the release).
Your standard install won't get the development releases, it will only get standard updates.
But .... the purple sentence only adds more speculation......
Only reporting what I see, Bill. :) Regardless, I have enough copies of Windows 7 and 8 to cover all the computers I have running now, plus a couple more if I want to run those too. What's good is only two of those are OEM and I've been putting off installing the Retail Pro version of Windows 8.1 on those.
And I think you're right, they missed that sentence. However, it won't make a whole lot of difference to me one way or the other, since I intend to continue testing Windows 10 for the foreseeable future.
What really bothers me the most, though, is that there are those out there with Vista and back who got their hopes up only to have them squashed. To me, that's just not fair.
From reading those if accurate, I might as well not bother keep testing windows 10 preview. I am not going to upgrade my only copy of windows 7 to windows 10.

groze When I read the first link, a riddle came to mind:
What does Microsoft and the Oracle of Delphi have in common?
Interpretation gymnastics are virtually required when parsing Microsoft's statements. Microsoft chooses its words carefully, and when it does disclose information, often does so in parcels that are by turns opaque, ambiguous and confusing to customers. That frequently forces it to retract or modify earlier comments.
I'm just going to find out how it is really going to work on the 29th like everyone else. It is immaterial to me. I'll either get it free, with or without an upgrade from 7-8.1 or I won't.
I also stay with the insider program, or I won't. Not going to fret about it. It'll happen the way it happens.
Now, it looks like it back to windows 7 & Xubuntu for me. I have a feeling with the next build release Microsoft works 7.0 won't work on the next build with I.E. being removed. Right now it worked on 10130 the 64 bit version but not the 32 bit install of windows 10.
I could tell from the article, windows beta publisher is not to happy about this change either.
I don't think Gabe answering any tweets either.
