Apple Inc.'s iPhone 6 Just Claimed 72% of This Massive Market

Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) is dominating the mobile enterprise space, according to Good Technology's Mobility Index Report.

During the first quarter, iOS devices accounted for 72% of all enterprise device activations worldwide, down just 1 percentage point from the prior-year quarter. Google (NASDAQ: GOOG ) (NASDAQ: GOOGL ) Android devices accounted for 26% of activations, while Microsoft's (NASDAQ: MSFT ) Windows Phone claimed 1%.
    Apple's enterprise plans

Over the past few years, businesses have relaxed their bring your own device, or BYOD, rules and allowed employees to use their own smartphones for work. As a result, popular consumer-facing iOS and Android devices have crept into the enterprise market.

That's also why Apple partnered with IBM (NYSE: IBM ) last year to sell iOS devices preloaded with Big Blue's cloud-based enterprise apps. It was a win-win situation for both companies -- Apple established a mobile presence among IBM's enterprise customers, and IBM gained ground in the mobile software and BYOD markets.
    Don't forget about Microsoft

Apple's big numbers in mobile enterprise activations look impressive, but that doesn't mean it's gaining much ground against Microsoft.

Microsoft has a massive footprint in PCs and 2-in-1 devices that isn't included in mobile enterprise activation numbers. According to NetMarketShare, various versions of Windows still run on over 90% of PCs worldwide. Businesses that rely on Windows PCs to connect with iPads generally need cloud-based apps that synchronize with desktop counterparts.
Apple's partnerships with IBM and third-party software companies are filling that gap, but Microsoft is addressing the need with two strategies. First, the Surface Pro can simply be docked into a docking station to be converted into a full desktop. This eliminates the need for dedicated mobile apps, making Surface Pros and similar 2-in-1 Windows devices ideal upgrades for aging PCs. As a result, Surface sales have risen annually during Microsoft's past three quarters, while iPad sales have declined for five consecutive quarters.
Second, the new Continuum feature for Windows 10 will blur the lines by letting users instantly convert Windows Phones and tablets into full PCs by plugging them into larger displays. This means Windows Phones and tablets could gain ground against the iPad once Windows 10 arrives this summer.

I find these statistics hard to believe. More than likely it's a very limited meaning of "device activations" and "enterprise". Google literally has 3x as many devices out there, so I find it hard to believe, and I don't believe enterprises are springing for iPhone 6's for everyone.

Yes, he based his article in reference to a one "Good Technology's Mobility Index Report".

    Mobility Index Report

Unfortunately one cannot view the report unless one signs up and I'm not willing to go those lengths. Also, it is relying on just one report.

Either way, it's no secret that iPhone and Android dominate the phone market with a greater percentage. I think Windows phone sales will increase in the long haul. How much is anyone's guess, but as he pointed out there's definitely a higher and higher demand for mobile devices.

What struck me in the the article is the potential of MS's business model. While not doing all that well on the phone end, MS is making good progress with the Surface and then Continuum in the forecast. With BYOD on the rise employees will simply dock a device as a full-blown PC. The Surface already performs well in that environment. With the power increasing in phablet form that could very well be feasible as well. As a side note, I read that MS is about to release a nine-inch phablet. If so then one only needs to carry one device around.

With that scenario, the advantage for employers is they only need to supply the docking station, not a tower PC, laptop, or any workstation. Money saved. Of course they still need IT to support the system and servers also. The cloud services I would think will eliminate servers in some scenarios.

BTW, I'm actually speaking this into my Lumia 1520 to copy and paste into the forum text box. Why? Because technology is allowing me to be more and more mobile as time goes on. I'll sit more behind my PC during winter, but often times I enjoy being outdoors during the summer months. Of course I might not need a tower. A docking station will suffice.

We'll probably never see the total elimination of the tower PC in our lifetime, but I think it's inevitable. Of course I'm speaking as a sixty-four-year-old.

Does anyone think Microsoft will ever realize their Windows 8/10/Phone UI is just plain ugly....! A little elegance goes a long way, not to mention color choices.

Everyones preferences are different. I find the UI quite elegant actually. I find the iPhone UI horrible. And Android is just a sea of icons that have very little feedback.

Obviously some people haven't owned nor seen too many Windows phones lately. From my Lumia 1520 with 8.1. If some find it ugly so be it.

Looks is one thing, but navigation is another. Working construction I've owned cell phones since the bags > then a brick > then a few two-ways > then a Razor > then a Droid > now a Lumia. Of course the tech has advanced, but this phone is far superior in navigation than the icon-filled Droid I had. More personalization by far. Don't forget the live tiles. Much more functional than the dead icon. :)

    How about multitasking?

    Lock screen:

Then there's the peek screen if I hold my hand over it briefly of which I can't take a screenshot. It's basically the lock screen with a black background and white lettering. Easy on the eyes in the middle of the night.

Quite honestly I haven't seen the latest iPhones or Androids, but can they take screenshots?

    Swipe right for All Apps:

I won't get into what Cortana can do. That's enough for now. :)

I'd love a Windows phone but until the major apps that I use start creating for Windows phone then I won't be touching it. Shame really, I hate Apple but am stuck with my iPhone as it does what I need it to.

    Hi there

with phones - it's 100% a matter of preference -- I find the use of the iPhone quite counter intuitive - especially the navigation BACK type of system. It's what you are used to. I quite like the Samsung S6 with the metal and curved screen corners but what puts me off that phone is the non removable battery - especially if you are out in the wild a lot and don't always have access to a charger -- swapping a battery is simple and easy.

I actually also LIKE the windows UI on a windows phone --I just don't like the HANDSETS -- they look like something designed out of the old East Germany / Soviet era -- if it was buildings we were talking about we would call the architecture "Stalin Brutalist Mode".

I'm sticking with my S5 for the moment -- nothing wrong with it at all. I would have gone Windows except for (IMO) the HIDEOUS handsets available.

Employ a few of those snazzy "Italian" designers of fairly liberal sexual beliefs and I'm sure you'd increase the sale of Windows phones by a significant amount. - Who ever said things like Ferrari's / Ducatti's etc were ever HIDEOUS looking !!!.

    Cheers
