    hmmm..
Phone Companion doesn't seem to want work, via USB..
the GUI won't access my SD card's details,
or auto-switch to Photo's to enable transfers from the mobile, like it used to..

    hmmm..
might be something to do with the USB2's that my mobo has..
I've ordered one of those little Inateck PCI-E/USB3 converters, maybe that will cure it..

    - same here - it opens and then shuts down immediately - is that via USB 3.0, CountMike?

    - I'm upgrading my mobo in any case, for the extra speed transfer..
    - it would be interesting to see if the problem with Phone Companion is widespread.. (??)

No, USB2 only on 640. No use even trying USB3 cable when it doesn't support it.
Just tried my brother's L535 with w8.1 on it, same thing so it must be the APP at fault. Without any phone it still just flashes and gets lost. Otherwise, phones do show up when connected.
