All they may loose is one year on upgrades only, They'll make plenty of money on new installations now and a year later when upgrade offer expires. Before, there was usually heavy discount for upgrades so in essence, they will not loose much and will ensure acceptance better than with W8 anyway. Calculate less for advertising and less taxes in all of that and MS won't loose as much as one might believe.

Will I be able to upgrade from the Windows 10 Technical Preview to the final release?
There is has been some debate regarding qualification for the final release of Windows 10.
Microsoft has noted the intention is to provide a direct upgrade path from the Preview to the final release. Of course, decisions can change. Recently, the company noted that you could upgrade non genuine licenses to Windows 10, but later it was found out, that license would be non genuine.
So, to be on the safe side, its best you ensure you have a valid genuine Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 license installed in order to qualify for the final release. Company officials have noted though if you join the Windows Insider Program and upgrade from Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 to Windows 10, you will qualify for the free upgrade to the final release.
Latest confirmation:
When asked if there would be a cut off date for Insiders before Windows 10 reached RTM, Microsoft's Gabriel Aul stated that preview builds would continue being delivered up until the final release.
"We expect to keep flighting builds to Insiders all the way up to RTM. More details to come, but no cutoff planned."

Since Microsoft made available the first pre-release build of Windows 10 in early October 2014, there has been some misunderstanding that this is not a product you should use to replace a production installation of Windows such as Windows 8 or 7 or Vista. Instead, if you must test it on a single machine, the best recommendation is to create a partition or have an a spare hard disk ready where you can install it. Windows 10 in its current pre-release state will expire and at the same time, it is unfinished work. So if you must evaluate it, the best way is by installing it beside your commercial installation of Windows.
If you do choose to upgrade your existing version of Windows to Windows 10, please be warned, it will make your recovery partition in operable, requiring that you have separate recovery media for reinstallation if necessary.

Just to be safe, make sure to keep or have the ability to reinstall Windows 8.1 in case you have to prove you have the OS to qualify for the free upgrade. MS has released this article with double talk about Genuine Devices--whatever that means.

The test preview is not recommended to replace your licensed Windows operating System. Install the preview on a separate partition, separate hard drive or a spare computer.

MS is trying to borrow a chapter out of Apple osx book, free OS. Apple has hardware to sell and software to work with their devices. In MS cases it is only software baring few devices. Disclaimer :I do not work for MS, I am not here to solve the corporate problems. Yet just to express my personal opinions.

Well he does work for MS. If you do not believe him send him a tweet. I have read what he tweeted at multiple sites, and if you cannot trust him then who can you trust about this?
