I'm doing a clean install. Kept having system crashes after playing around with problems with maximizing and restoring to original size with apps in this version. I also played around with paint 3D and find it useless at this point in development.

Something interesting about Insider settings I decided to test (notice please: what's interesting to me don't have to be interesting to you, I know it, but I find this interesting enough to post).

I had a W10 PRO version 1607 installed on a physical machine, set up just with a local account, originally not opted in for Insider builds, fully updated. I was thinking if it's possible to make another local admin user account, use that other account to opt in to Insider builds without converting user account to a Microsoft account, then simply remove this other account, leaving machine only with original local account which has never opted in for Insider builds.

My non-native English makes this hard to explain, here's what I did:

    • W10 PRO version 1607, only one local user account, no Insider builds
    • Made another local account, used it to opt in to Insider builds without switching user account to Microsoft account, set Insider builds to slow ring
    • Reboot, sign in to original local account, remove the other account used to opt in to Insider program
    • The machine picked up last Slow Ring build (14965) and upgraded, although there are no user account present opted in!

Of course I am not able to change Insider ring because the only existing user account is a local account with no connection to Insider program, but at least this proves that once a PC has been opted in it remains opted in, regardless if the account used to opt in has been removed or not. At least as long as user does not change / edit registry settings in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsSelfHost\Applicability.

Ring selection greyed out but other than that this PC will get Insider builds:

Would Microsoft regard this as a bug? Probably, because what you are saying Kari should be impossible without a Microsoft account on the machine.

I give up on it. With the old Paint, I could resize a pic to 50% and then to 40% and it was pretty much sized for upload to TF. I'm not sure what's happening with 3D.

I'll just find something a little bit easier to use.
About resizing screenshots before posting: I am a great fan of Screenpresso screenshot tool. Even in its free version it's so simple to get a screenshot then resize it to any size, copy it to clipboard and finally paste the resized screenshot here (switching to WYSIWYG editor allows you to paste images from clipboard to your posts without uploading them first).

    Resize:

Copy to clipboard and exit Screenpresso (close editor):

Switch to WYSIWYG editor here on Ten Forums, paste the screenshot:

Paint.net is a useful free tool. I've been using it for years for converting, resampling, resizing and cropping pics for web use.

    getpaint.net

+1 from me, I've used it for years and once you learn how to navigate it and all the shortcuts I don't see why you'd need to pay for Photoshop. Plenty of plugins available too.

You don't have to have a single Microsoft account set up on your PC to opt in to Insider builds, it's completely unnecessary. A local admin account is all you need; when opting in with a local account simply select Sign in to just this app instead:

Windows user account remains local, user will be opted in for Insider builds. If a local account user enters Windows password here and clicks Next, the Windows user account will be switched to a Microsoft account.
