Try deleting all files in folder

    c:\windows\softwaredistribution

(not all files can be deleted - just ignore them)

Wait 10 minutes or so, then search for updates again.
thanks for that it is the only thing that worked of all things that I tried
waited 15 mins before update and have now got 14955
    too 2hrs to install
as normal scroll not work on touchpad
    so far no problems

Check your One Drive, it may be syncing from there.

Do you remember anything you did before you noticed the problem? I encountered the same problem before but it's on a USB flashdrive and turns out that the USB contains an infected file that keeps duplicating files even though they have been deleted already.

Well it must be syncing it from somewhere. The kicker is why they are all 0 bites. Looks more like a play list than files themselves.
