LOL I saw we posted at the same time, went to add this part to my post:

Once a PC has digital license, you can for instance clean install any build you want to (starting from 10586, first one with digital entitlement). It is absolutely completely totally irrelevant if the machine is or has been an Insider machine.

Buying today a new PC from shop which comes let's say version 1511, you can upgrade it with this weeks Insider build 14946 and it remains activated non-Insider Windows. It does not automatically join Insider program, nor does it require the user to join Insider program.

Only difference is that on other non-Insider machines running an official build (version 1511 or 1607 at the moment), Windows never expires. Windows will expire on a machine which has been upgraded with an Insider build, or on which an Insider build has been clean installed, regardless if the user decides to not join Insider program and machine remains a non-Insider machine.
Aha, I get it now. His was properly activated (upgraded from W7) but he lost it all with that HDD, it's going on same computer just new HDD.

He'd need to join IP program to take advantage of further upgrades that go beyond version 14946 but he would get updates that are common to both IP and CB versions.
He don't have to join Insider program, as long as he gets (from Count for instance) a new build ISO before this 14946 expires May 2017, and then continues to get Insider builds always before the current build he's using expires.

Lots of time till than. I'll give him my iso when he comes next time, his internet speed is really atrocious, would take him couple of days to download upgrade, updates are bad enough.

    Sure, Kari.
I just meant he won't get them automatically.

    Cheers,

He should have digital entitlement as long as it was 10586 or later he had activated on that machine. Digital licenses were introduced first in build 10586.

Just remind him that from here on his Windows has expiration date, regardless if he never joins Insider program. Tell him about winver command to check the expiration date.

Right, he was on AE, so no problems there, he upgraded from 7 just few days before it came out, I gave him the update and he did it that way. We are in contact daily so I'm sure he'll tell me if it gets close to expiry date. Anyway, he doesn't have 946 yet, I wanted to be sure what would happen first.

I was just wandering, what would happen if somebody with normal Anniversary Edition would upgrade to 14946 using ISO ?
I'd be upgraded to Build 14946.

    CountMike said:
Would it stay activated and would it join Insiders automatically ?
It's already activated, and once legitimate Windows 10 has been put onto a computer, it is legitimate from that point on. I may be wrong, but I believe you have to make a conscious decision for your computer to join the Insider Program. So, I wouldn't think it would automatically join.

What would happen with updates and upgrades after that if it would go thru ?
Dunno, and I'm not too sure I'd want to find out.

Seriously, I wouldn't think you'd get updates from that point on. You'd no longer be on the latest "retail" version, so WU wouldn't have anything to go on; same with Insider Updates; nothing to go on unless you consciously put yourself on the Insider Program.

    Just my opinion, and YMMV.

So frustrated with this build. Gears of War 4 will not load for me. Downloaded the game at least 4 times already and it's such a pain because it's 80gb. Wasted a whole weekend trying to get this to work. Windows Store is such a joke.

I have said it before, as have multiple other members: Why donšt you guys read the release notes before you decide to upgrade?

    Known issues for PC

    • If you have 3rd party antivirus products such as Bitdefender, Kaspersky Antivirus, F-Secure Antivirus and Malwarebytes installed on your PC – your PC might not be able to complete the update to this build and roll-back to the previous build.
    • Larger Windows Store games such as ReCore, Gears of War 4, Forza Horizon 3, Killer Instinct and Rise of the Tomb Raider may fail to launch.

    - I couldn't even access my Xbox Live account in the last build..
    - at least they sorted that one out in this current Insider build..
    - I still can't run ReCore or Forza Motorsport6 APEX, though..
