You have to upgrade to 8.1 and that key will work, if you did not use it to upgrade previously.
OK, I get it now.
Back when I worked as a volunteer rebuilding donated PCs for re-donation, we couldn't get that to work; only occasionally did the reinstall media come with the PC. However, one large corporation donated a bucket load of PCs and Windows 98 disks packaged with their keys. Lots of folks got helped by those computers!
I have not seen it stated by Microsoft that Windows 10 will accept Windows 7 or 8 keys. I think you'll get a new Windows 10 key when you do the free upgrade. That is the key you would use on a clean install.
Without the requirement of a license key, that will make activations a lot easier.
It's not going to try and insert it's own license SLIC into the Motherboard? In which case changing out the Mobo would actually stop this working..
Sure I can.
On one computer (probably this desktop), I won't let Windows 8.1 upgrade to Windows 10. I will most likely also use this desktop for the Windows 10 continuing Insider Program.
Well, Rich, you've started me on the way to figuring out how I'm going to work with Windows 10 and Windows 8.1.
I have three laptops, two of which are dual boot. On Lappy 17, I'll let Windows 8.1 upgrade to Windows 10 and keep the Preview as the Insider Program. That's as far as I'll go for now, since I have another 17" (pretty old) laptop and a 15.6" as well.
What I would like to see is for MS ta say clean and loud; "If you upgrade your RETAIL Win7/8.1 to same Win 10, you will be able to keep or get new license to RETAIL version and will not be tied to your device".
