If you use the "Upgrade This PC Now" option, there is no resizing partitions or registry edits. Windows does all that in the background. If you boot from the install media, then yes you have other options. Even then there is no registry edit required? I've never had to edit the registry on or after a Windows install or upgrade. Not sure what you did to have to do that?
I had to resize the partition because the install program could not resize the recovery partition. I caused that problem when I cloned a new SSD for Windows 10. The upgrade option does not allow you to resize partitions.

As for having to edit the registry, I had to do that to get a program that I still need to work. It is a discontinued program, so I in no way blame Microsoft.

I am glad that I read this forum because I knew how to fix my problems.

Download Windows 10 is only recommended for tech-savvy users. I guess if things don't go as planned, you are not tech-savvy and it is your own fault for not waiting. I downloaded it and upgraded my laptop, it was an all day job and yes I needed to be very tech-savvy, resizing hidden partitions, editing the registry, etc.
Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot this was a tech site

As for the rest of your post, it's already been addressed.

    Just FYI...

I posted earlier that the update notification icon for Windows 10 had mysteriously disappeared from my desktop. Well late last night it mysteriously reappeared, thanking me for my reservation....

Perhaps Microsoft will start speeding things up now :)

Still no $Windows-BT folder though. Meanwhile my Win 7 machine has seen its folder slowly creeping up to the 8gig mark? It's currently sitting at 5.17 gig. I did the reservation thing about a week ago.

Anyway not a biggie, just FYI as I'm trying to see how long this process actually takes. Though I may get impatient and upgrade the Win 7 machine tonight as I need it for testing purposes as a precursor to my Win 8 main rig.

So far everything is running smoothly on my laptop, and the only issue I've run into was were Edge wouldn't allow me to post at DP Review forums (a photography site), had to switch to IE to post.

Sygnus21, before I used the Create Media Tool to get my upgrade the screen you posted had gone on my system from that to saying something about Validating my PC. I expect this slow rollout, which they do speak to with "upgrade could come as soon as a few days or weeks," has to do with Quality Control which I don't blame Microsoft for. I can only say sorry Microsoft, I wanted my upgrade. :)

If you let this system go through the entire process it will be interesting to see just how long the wait is. Good experiment for the fun of it.

I'm still waiting on my 8.1 Notebook get the box sygnus21 showed but I finally got the icon on my desktop 7 machine, I had said I didn't think that would upgrade and I was right.

Clicking on the icon it tells me they are sorry but it can't be upgraded to 10 the report tells me the CPU is not supported. I'm not bothered it's got Ultimate and I don't use it that much apart from my banking.

Yeah but my experiment may fail due to impatience

I did not say you need to be tech-savvy, Microsoft did. I get the feeling that there are lots of people in this forum that don't get enough sleep!

On my W7 machine, the ~BT folder is full, the install.esd is sitting there. I am not in a hurry for this install, I have 2 other machines running W10, but not sure why the delay. I just thought when we did a reservation, things would move along....
