Will MS begin charging Win 10 users for future upgrades soon.

No issue but a general discussion. I read the MS answers forum and a user has asked this question saying they'd heard that MS could begin charging a subscription fee as early as Jan 2017. You can read his post here: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...-start-a/28079446-1240-4818-bfda-ea568651dc57 however it is the reply from a MS forum moderator which is interesting imo, to me the reply isn't denying the suggestion but reading between the lines they seem to say yes they will but not until there's an official announcement.
Am I reading too much into the reply & what does everyone else think?

Depends how you view what an upgrade is. In the future I'd be happy to pay for major Windows version updates, I always have done. However I wouldn't pay for minor upgrades and I don't think that Microsoft would charge for these unless they wanted to shoot themselves in the foot.

    Interesting isn't it

I too would be willing to pay for major upgrades, after all Windows 10 has a service lifetime and will at some point become the O.S. of yesteryear to be precise October 14, 2025, I would prefer a one off purchase price as I have always purchased retail versions of whatever OS my computer comes with, but I could live with a yearly subscription charge.

I might be willing to pay for a subscription of future editions of windows, but certainly not windows 10 and certainly not if it's effectively Adware like Windows 10, I don't want to be paying and having adverts shoved onto my hard drive and in my face.

I have gone back to windows 7 right now it really is a pleasure to use now that the nagware has been disabled and taken off.

This morning I heard on an American radio show that comes on the air daily that Microsoft probably*as soon as January 2017 will start a subscription service fee of $50 per computer yearly*for every person who is running Windows 10.* (My wife and I have purchased every one of your platforms with the exception of Vista and Windows 8.1 because I did not like the platforms).* We both received our free upgrade from windows 7 Ultimate*to Windows 10.
It's hard to really judge the credulity of the source since the Dr didn't say what show he heard this rumor on. There are so many individuals that have some axe to grind against MS that it wouldn't shock me that this is just one more trying to stir the pot with more anti MS banter. From all of the indications and statements to date from MS the updates/upgrades to 10 will remain free for the life of the device and I don't see that changing. MS would be committing suicide if they decide at this stage to charge.

I suspect the whole thing is about the cancelation of the free upgrade at the end of July. Without any really specific quotes or more solid information it's hard to say what the radio show was about.

It has been discussed many time, it is not the matter if, but when. Enterprise is already on subscription. A subscription task is present on all Windows editions since 1607. 10 is the last Windows and the digital licence is transferable for the unlimited time. MS has to make money somehow, it is just waiting, until at least 50% move to 10, till it introduces it. MS has already said, that the basic edition will be displaying ADs and maybe will be even for free or very cheap.

Ummm.... let's say Microsoft started charging $99 for each big upgrade to the OS - like the first "November Update" and the "Anniversary Update". How would that be "shooting themselves in the foot" or "committing suicide"? Are millions of users going to immediately dump Windows and move to Linux? Are computer manufacturers going to stop including OEM installations of Windows on the computers they sell? No. A certain percentage of users would pay the fee. A certain percentage of users would not pay the fee and remain on the last build of Windows they have that is at no additional cost until it became totally obsolete like Windows XP (and there are still users clinging to XP). And a very, very tiny percentage of users would jump off the MS bandwagon and move to Linux or Apple.

Do I think MS will start charging for updates to Windows 10? No. But would MS suddenly get shoved off their king of the hill spot among OS companies if they did? Also NO.

There must be something wrong with my installations of Windows 10 because it isn't anything at all like that description... can someone tell me what is wrong with mine?

Maybe you turned it off? It is possible, at least for now, not sure about Store ADs people showed, I do not use it.

Nope. Brand new clean installs of Anniversary updates here because the newest fast ring Insider builds broke my connections to my NAS.

I wouldn't pay $99 (or UK equivalent) for each upgrade especially if there's two or more a year, even £50 a year would be high especially if there's still adverts.
I will wait to see if & when charging a subscription arrives.
