Back from work and tried windows update on 1st machine. Give up after 15 mins wait and use Microsoft Update Catalog to download KB3189866 to install. Rest of the updates install fast and smooth after a restart.

However, 2 other machines stuck at 69% and 70% despite enable update from PCs on my local network with 1st machine remains on and online. End up manual update like 1st machine.

OK, so I got tired of waiting. Tried a restart, windows update now said: 'couldn't finish an update because the device was turned off'. Clicked 'Try again' and it continued from the 95%, this time with Task Manager's Performance tab showing sustained downloads on the WiFi. 10 minutes on it completed download and started the install. Now it's asking for the restart to complete the install. (wish me luck)

Just finished with a manual cumulative update for my Laptop. Wish I had done the same with my PC as I could have saved almost a GB of data on my monthly allotment.

Can I just download the update from MS catalog website and start installing with WU running in background? :)

I haven't checked but, there may be some new extensions for edge. Just saying.

Continually sticking here at 95%. Like somebody else early on in this thread the Windows Standalone Installer is not working for me and I get an error message. So fed up with this, why can't MS break up and stagger these updates over time instead of combining so many on Patch Tuesday? I'm lucky to be on a fibre connection and I don't know how those on adsl can tolerate this.
Can someone direct me to a thread showing how to re-set Windows Updates and I'll try that.....thanks.

If stuck on the download, then:
    a. Boot to safe mode
    b. Rename the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution and C:\Windows\Catroot2 folders
(Use search in C:\Windows\ to find Catroot2)

Note - you will lose your update history.

Restart, the update will probably start downloading again. Be prepared for it to pause sometimes.

-> I'm on ADSL, and had to try three times- didn't take that long, apart from waiting for the update NOT to download.

It downloaded 3 mins before the end of my active hours period, saying it would restart..
I left it for 10 mins after the active hours period, PC doing 'nothing' - still didn't restart, so I did a manual restart.

I tried that too- the 'Next page' where there's a 'Browse' to click on was unclickable, 'cos the browser didn't complete the connection.

To me the entire update disappeared when it told me it failed. Then my Local System Service Host has been running constantly at 8% for the next 4 hours while I'm getting 8 kbps spikes once every 4 second. I'm guessing it's downloading? but I don't see it in Windows Update. I can only see that an update to Windows Defender is on queue. Should I just wait this one out or what? I really don't want to push something manually if I don't have to.
