Just to confirm if I am reading this correctly

I have Win 8.1 Home at the moment so would be due to get the Home version of 10 via upgrade

However, as I am in the insider program, I could update my main machine shortly before launch of 10 to the Win 10 Pro Preview and then get the pro version for free ?
I doubt it.. if you have a home license you get the home edition of Win10. Having a pro copy of the TP will have no impact on this:

Unless I'm missing something, I don't see any advantage to being an insider over the public at large.
If you're running non-genuine there is, otherwise, it's a preview:

    preview

    [ ˈprēˌvyo͞o ]

    NOUN
noun: preview · plural noun: previews

    • an inspection or viewing of something before it is bought or becomes generally known and available:
"you can get a sneak preview of the pictures on sale"

      • a showing of a movie, play, exhibition, etc., before its official opening.
      • a short extract shown in a movie theater as publicity for a forthcoming film.
      • a commentary on or appraisal of a forthcoming film, play, book, etc., based on an advance viewing.
      • computing
a facility for inspecting the appearance of a document before it is printed.

    VERB
verb: preview · third person present: previews · past tense: previewed · past participle: previewed · present participle: previewing

    • display (a product, movie, play, etc.) before it officially goes on sale or opens to the public:
"the company will preview an enhanced version of its database"

It has nothing to do with having an advantage(except getting a head start on knowing the OS before the general public), it has to do with seeing if you like it enough to install at RTM, and to help improve it, through giving input.

I've seen nothing that would indicate insiders get a special upgrade like from Home to Pro. Everything I've read has them treated like the general public with just the standard upgrade.

I agree.. the upgrade a person/user gets is going to be based on the license/version of Win7/Win8.1 and it has nothing to do with the TP.

This was the bit I was looking at, am I totally misreading this

One way to work around this is by joining the Windows Insider Program and migrate to the Windows 10 Pro Insider Preview which will qualify for a free upgrade to the final RTM release of Windows 10.

if an upgrade gives like for like, then if using 10 pro tp it will upgrade to 10 pro final?

I woudnt bet on it either, and always though it was how you have been saying previously
final version is based on what you now have on your machine (not tp)

    confusion starts again

It looks like TP users will only get something if they are TP users after the free upgrade is gone unless M$ decides to give all TP users a upgrade to PRO.
