Windows 10 Could Kill Patch Tuesday Once and for All

    Posted: 06 May 2015

Windows 10 is becoming a game changer for Microsoft, as it's supposed to help the company continue its domination in the desktop industry, increase its presence in the mobile world, and adjust its approach to customers on every single platform.

One of the things that Microsoft promised to greatly improve in Windows 10 is the update cadence, pledging to release improvements for those running the new OS on their computers as soon as they are available. In other words, you won't have to wait a few months or years to get major updates for your PC, but a lot less because the company would ship them when development and testing are completed.
Microsoft's executives reiterated this plan at BUILD 2015 last week and at Ignite earlier this week, but there still are a few specifics to be disclosed here.
The biggest question concerns the updates that Microsoft is planning to ship to Windows users. Are security updates included in this new approach?
Because if they are, this change could mean the end of Patch Tuesday.

Just so long as I get to choose: 1/ Which updates are installed and 2/ When they are installed.

If that incredibly-annoying forced-update rubbish they have in the betas becomes permanent, that would definitely be a game-breaker for me.

Microsoft is releasing a new version of Windows Update for Business called.. well, Windows Update for Business. This is sort of like WSUS, but allows enterprises to choose which updates to install on all their systems directly from Windows Update. I imagine WSUS will still be around to give local caches.

This allows enterprises to choose to update when they want, and allows updates to go out when they're available.

Having Windows Update locked would be a deal breaker for me, but I don't see them doing that in the finale release. Right now they just want the updates installed to get feed back, like the trying to make you upgrade install instead of clean installing. Good or bad its all for info gathering. It just isn't going to work, especially for driver updates, if its locked in the ON position.

The key word to keep in mind here is "could". MS might keep something like patch Tuesday and if they don't they'll keep some update process in place. For me.. this is a non issue.

Yes, there will still be updates, patch Tuesday or no patch Tuesday. They just won't hold them until the next patch Tuesday. It will go back to the way it was before they instituted patch Tuesday. I guess we got a little off track with the locked unlocked thing.
