Dunno, but I hope this is the last time I have to verify my Microsoft account!
I only had to do that once, on my first clean install. I've seen others here voice that same complaint though?

Just for curiosity and for the sake of confirmation I switched to automatic login and I also get the default stick figure on restart. This does not occur if I manually lock screen or signout.
@tracit99 Look here %ProgramData%\Microsoft\User Account Pictures\ and here %appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\AccountPictures delete all the "doughboys". Back them up somewhere first.

I found this at [Windows Tip] Remove User Picture from Login Screen / Start Menu - AskVG

I think it's a typical bug for those who that updated from preview builds. Me too!
Same for fresh installs. Login with password fine, login with autologin borked.

This bug has been around for several builds including the default grumpy cyclops picture.

I'm fixing to clean install this most recent update and than try to install the KB update. Is the safest route to first unplug everything from the machine, power cord, remove battery and run the update without internet? Or at some point do I have to plug up to the internet? I've seen some differences in opinions the last week.

I've been told I have to verify my account at least once (and in some cases several times) with every new Build. Don't understand why.

I know one thing . . . if you remove both the power cord and the battery, you're not going to install anything! In fact, both the power cord (in case the battery should die while doing the install) should not be removed. Neither should the battery.

The only thing(s) I would remove from the machine would be any external storage devices, hard drives and USB drives. And, the only reason I'd remove those is if I didn't know which drive letter went to which drive.

Come to think on it, maybe you should go get Brink's Clean Install tutorial:

    Windows 10 - Clean Install - Windows 10 Forums

That should give you all the information you'll need.

LOL, You misunderstood me. The battery removal and unplug everything is preventative measures after shutdown prior to booting from a usb. Its a safety measure I learned on clean installs. It removes all electricity from the machine. This has been a fix in the past for guys with install issues. Than plug the battery back in. My main concern is installing the ISO for this anniversary update and getting stuck. Some tactics work some don't. Do I need internet to do a clean install running the latest version "non insider Windows 10 currently"

For some of us Virgo literal minds, you gotta spell it out!

In all my 30 plus years of beta testing, that's one that got past me, but it makes perfect sense now that you spell it out for this literal mind. I've always been very conscientious about wearing the anti-static bracelet/strap when working on the innards of a computer.

So, turn off the machine, unplug it, then take out the battery and all external peripherals; thus removing any and all (including static) electricity from the machine. Now, nothing gets fried in the process!

Oops, StarFerret grabbed the tip and stuffed it in her bag of tricks!

I'm pretty sure you will need to have Internet, but then I've never tried an installation without. Something is niggling at the back of my mind that I've seen it said you do need Internet for any installation of Windows 10. Maybe . . . maybe not.
