Even with custom install. its best to unplug the other drives. Windows can install parts of itself on them for some reason. Best to be safe. Our install guide even mentions this step.

Backup the install.esd file if you have space somewhere and then delete it. Run sfc /scannow first though.
Thank you Swarfega, where is located the install.esd file?

guys windows anniversary update messed my D: hdd.I had all my games installed in this disk.what can u do now?

Here is a screenshot.pls help me

Ive noticed too about an hout ago, that this AU seems to do something with the partitions during the upgrade process. I noticed there are now new recovery partitions on all my Windows devices about 450MB~ at the end of each disk, which weren't there before. This is insane, that Windows re-size your disk (which is dangerous and can always lead to corruption) without notifying or warn you. I guess something went wrong whatever for you sadly there. This AU is total garbage, but of course all the user on here be like "awesome patch :P" who just use their PC for Word.

Also on one of my tablets which had a sd-card in there, the sd-card is now corrupt. All folders are gone on the disk and it has lots of LOST&FOUND entry.

Not if you know what you're doing. No offense intended.

You should catch it before the install starts because it gets deleted by the setup routine during the install process.

It's good to explicitly take a backup and take control over when the install happens, and unplug drives etc.

But what about Joe Public who is going to get updated one day when he/she isn't expecting it and is just using their computer? It's really not so good in that scenario as they won't have had an opportunity to make a backup first, so it needs to be 100% reliable.

If you are ready to delete it, just run "Disk Cleanup" and will delete it properly for you.

Happy that I have almost finished to download and secure all ISO images I need. Windows 10 and Windows 10 N, both in UK English, US English, Finnish, Swedish and German. All 10 ISOs downloaded, now starts the upgrade process of a bunch of virtual machines :)

My user folders like Documents etc, are on my Data drive. If I unplug it during an upgrade I'll get errors on boot up even before I do the upgrade. I've been doing this since DOS and never unplugged any drives during an upgrade or clean install. This is the first time ever that I have lost a drive in the process.
