Total agreement in the frustration at MS switching system restore off by default. Not the smartest of moves. Most of us know to look out for this and check it but the majority of the population will be ignorant to this crucial feature being switched off - I know my entire family would be blissfully unaware and I guess that is the same for the global majority
Downloaded the .esd, made an .iso and updated from there. Had a freeze on initial reboot and time will tell if it's an issue.
If anyone here uses Steam take a look at this:

Not many. Even the tech savvy ones who know they *should* take backups don't always do it (and I'm guilty of not making them as often as I should).
If there's a fault in the Update which is effectively deleting partitions for some people, it will be really bad for someone who wasn't expecting the update and hasn't got a backup.
Mostly seems to have worked
Only issue is I have no Cortana, just got the search box, even trying to use it within Edge just gives me the option of Search Bing
Anyone know how to enable it (Language settings etc are all correctly set to UK)
When mine was ready for windows it asked me did I want Cortana to help me. There was 3 options Skip, Enable Later or Now.
I choose now and Cortana working ok.
You must of either pressed one of the other options.
See if a restart will enable it or try Settings the one with the 3 dots
Sorry apart from that I cant think of any other way to help you.
