We didn't use the internet to connect to our systems. There was software from IBM that allowed use to dial directly into them to access the mainframes. We started using PC's at work around 1985 when we got the IBM XT. Primitive but we were able to connect to the mainframes and do spread sheet and word processing without an issue. Travelers also had a system where we could bring home an XT/AT to use for work.

Yes, all work related. I'm familiar with the state-of-the-art 56kbs modem. Lucky if you got 34! Usually 28 or 14.4. Don't miss at all having to yell "Don't pick up the phone!! I'm on the computer!".

It would be quite a site to watch this world today if suddenly all computers just stopped.........

I agree.. we're so dependent on them if they did fail to work it would be a total disaster.

I guess most people here are from the US. Even if you know what does it mean to be poor, poor in the US is not the same as in the third world. The difference is in opportunities. In the third world you basically need to win the lottery to get out of the $100/month life. There is just no other way.
    Bravo ! unifex.

I will not speak for unifex, but I am confident to say that unifex was alluding to pirating and counterfeiting. Not about individual petty thefts.

Desolation is not an excuse to become unlawful, but it is the contributing cause.
Self-preservation is built-in. The lure to get out of utter hopelessness no matter what can be irresistible. To some, that is the only ticket to escape from the black hole. Only those who are or had been there before can truly feel the pains, the insults and the anguish, and only they can truly understand what destitution really is.

That depends on each person situation on whether they need a computer and/or internet access and also where you live in the world. You could live without electricity & heat but would you? The U.S. really depend on computers-a little to much in my opinion for almost everything.

Groze, my post was very tongue-in-cheek and was in reply to earlier posts. Not advocating going back to the abacus at all! But, you're right about the dependency. Gotta take the downside along with the benefits.

They ask me but I don't give them mine since they don't really need to use it.
It's not needed but it does make it easier. Two of my doctors will email me two days ahead of time to remind me of my appointment. If I want to check on my test results I can log in at anytime to see what the results are. It's nice not worrying about what the office hours are, wasting the staffs time to answer my phone call and having to pulling my chart. It's also nice not getting a busy signal or being put on hold. For now it's a option. I do see this changing in time though. Getting back on subject I see it as a plus to make available affordable stripped down computers or devices so everyone can benefit from the technology.

Raspberry Pi with Ubuntu, the hardware is cheap, just hook it up to a HDTV through HDMI(like me) get a cheap or used keyboard & mouse, install Ubuntu. Nothing to steal, nothing to Pirate.
There are absolutely no reasons to be criminal or even in the "gray zone".
