downloaded alright but said there was a problem with something else downloading and to reboot
the only other thing that was downloading was a defender update.
    after reboot it installed
touch pad still working which is unusual.

The interesting point is that this is the very first cumulative update for an insider build. In 18 months of new builds I don't remember a single cumulative update. Could be 14342 is close to the Anniversary release. Or the team might be testing new wrinkles in delivering cumulative updates. Interesting development in any case.

They had patches released for the 14295 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3156425

Also pretty sure I have seen them patch the slow build in their monthly patch updates.

My guess is they had some quick fixes that is in a new build (and the fixes make it stable enough to push it to the slow group) is fairly far away compared to the previous builds, probably a lot of bugs they want to fix first.

The only patches I remember seeing on fast ring are the @#$%!^& patches for Adobe Flash. This is the first cumulative update, though. I don't know about slow ring because I have never used it.

Since this cumulative update, Speedfan 4.51 (latest stable version) has been unable to start.

Update: Probably not Speedfan at all, but Classic Shell. It's become slow starting which interferes with starting of Speedfan.

Update 2: All OK now. Going back to Free Bitdefender, which I had recently uninstalled in favor of Windows Defender, did it. Don't want to say Windows Defender was definitely the culprit, but all the evidence is pointing to that.

For Insiders running the Fast ring, KB3158988 IS the first cumulative update.

There was one for build 14295 but that one is for Slow ring users. Fast ring users would have been updated to 14316 before that update was released. Therefore Fast ring users would not have seen it or aware of it at all.
