Shawn produced a very comprehensive tutorial on this, here:

    Thanks Dave,

I figured Brink figured this one out - I'm only a few months behind and often too lazy to look before posting

Once in a while I post something before Brink write the tut, but not often ... there was one tip where we posted 11 minutes apart - he still beat me

As far as things going away in the final release (your post# 34), organizations have too much invested in the way they run Windows for MS to just remove a function or feature. They might change the UI but the mechanics are still under the hood.

If they modify a DLL or change the registry keys, there's usually a way to re-instate the previous operation. That is the real beauty of Windows and part of the curse. MS has been hog tied for years having to support previous versions and legacy code.

Anyway ... thanks for pointing to the tutorial. I just implemented it. Now I have some 'extra' time to learn about other things.

I can't +rep you here in the news thread - will have to wait until I come across another one of your posts that deserve tilting the scales.

I am particularly miffed over media center being killed off as I use 3 machines with it so they have to stay on 7 and frankly most of the rest of my machines will too. I will probably dual boot on my 2 main machines and blow away the 8.1 installs........Or not. Microsoft may redeem themselves yet with a classic Windows 2000 type theme and a Full Windows 7 theme. I doubt it. I feel we have a collection of touch based fan boys who adore the stupid simplistic look. Here we are in 2015 and I can have 2 color icons on my desktop........nice.....my circa 1997 Windows 95 PII 128mb ram 4 meg ATI video card did better than that with animated icons from the Plus Pack.
Yes we are in 2015 and everything is getting a clean modern look, even the Internet, Android, OSX and Android. Even architecture and automobiles.
Anyway we're supposedly running computers not entering a competition to see who's got the glitziest screen, if you want that get third party add ons, I'd rather have a clean interface with as few distractions as possible.
As far as touch based fanboys go who enjoy the stupid simplistic look, count me as one of them. If I want glitz and glamour I can always go back to Vista.
I bought 3 WMC for Windows 8 but I rarely use them anymore, I use Kyodi and streaming services, the world seems to be moving on and I'm glad to be moving with the times, the past holds very little interest for me except for the memories.

A kind thought, but don't sweat over it. I am often too lazy to give reps and, in return, don't get so many. But the "medals" etc are , in any case, meaningless to me.

Agreed. I can't care less of touch interface on my desktop. AFAIK, these "apps" (I hate that f*ing word) are much more basic and MS is going to replace the advanced option by... a basic option? The more I read about Windows 10, the closer it gets to Windows 8 and it makes me more and more reluctant to switch from Win7, even with the free update.

Personally I could care less if it's control panel or settings app. I really only need Security & Maintenance and Defender and Admin. tools(also in start menu) often and I can pin them to Quick Access. Everything else, once my system is set up isn't used that often to get worked up about where it is, or what the UI looks like.

I don't see this as a big deal. Might take a little while to figure out where some settings are but after a bit of use it shouldn't be a problem. lol, I'm already starting to forget where stuff was in the Windows 7 Start Menu. Keyboard and trackball mostly for me. I don't find things any harder to click on than any other OS? Touch friendly or not. Tile or Icon, you still have to touch it, press it, click it, so what's the difference?

It would be nice if I could get rid of the nVidia update in Settings but I can't. That's the sort of thing that needs correcting and hopefully will be. I don't care about the UI, but I certainly care about being able to maintain my PC the way I want to and govern what drivers/updates/programs I want and need.

I think the unwanted driver updates etc, is just a side effect of Microsoft not wanting you to block updates in the preview builds. Somebody just didn't think it though. I'm pretty sure that will change in the RTM build. You'll get control over what updates get installed and when. If you don't it will be a show stopper for me and a lot of other users, and I think they know that. They'd get a lot of negative press over it, that they don't need or want.

Betcha they're already getting a lot of flak over the arbitrary settings and drivers we're given now, Alpha! :) So, yeah, they should know what we like and don't like.

What really worries me is that "silent majority" out there that just take what's given and don't worry about it. Microsoft may think those of us who "complain" are just the "noisy minority". :)
