I'd like to read those regarding reset file type.
Think it started at page #38 (post #378).

    Thank you.
I don't see the same suggestion in page 38.
I was suggesting to reset All file type associations.
Please read the tutorial I posted.

Does not matter. Just one suggestion out of dozens. Not important.

Thank you for going through pages and pages for me.

Just one thought.. it is possible to assign a browser as the default from the browser options.. as in say, FF. You can go to the options and set it as the default directly and then the it shows up in the Windows setting. Until I did that FF would not show up in the Windows Settings.
    Screen shot:
    Attachment 74583

Before that I didn't have FF or Chrome show up in that section of the settings..
    Just trying to help out..

Yep, "Always check if Firefox is your default browser" and then, "Firefox is your default browser".

When I do a clean install and eventually install Firefox, it says "Make Firefox my default browser". When I click on that, it takes me directly to settings. There are a few gazillion ways each browser pokes us to make itself the default. :)

David, look at my Post 510; it should explain something of what I've found out about file type settings.

I am sorry. I still don't see from post #510 that you had done the Reset all file types as I suggested.

Anyway, I went and switched default to Edge and everything opens without asking me how do I want to open it.

Sorry you have had such problems.
I'll stay out of this as I have no more suggestion to you.
    Good luck.

Yes, I have, and I've shown that it is confirmed.

If I have Firefox set as my default browser, and I right click on Start>Control Panel>Default Programs>Set your default programs>Firefox I see as per the windows that pops up: "This program has all its defaults". The reason I see this is that I have already set Firefox as my default browser and it is set to open everything it can.

So now I click on "Choose defaults for this program". Because Firefox has been set as my default program "to open all file types and protocols it can", every possible file type and protocol that Firefox can open is checked.

If I should look at Edge in that list, I'm told it has 4 out of 9 defaults. If you click on Choose defaults for this program, you will notice that Firefox is the default browser for everything that is unchecked in that list except for PDF files, which will be opened by the default PDF Viewer Plus. The reason for this is that Edge is not my default browser.

The same thing will go for any browser installed on my system; if it is set as the default browser, it will have all its defaults (unless I have set another default for a file it can open, such as PDFs); if it is not the default browser, it will have only a partial list of its defaults, since Firefox is the default browser.

So, in a nutshell, I really don't have to go down a long list of files and protocols (I'd be hard pressed to understand them all anyway) in order to select what my default browser can open; that's done for me with "Set this program as default (Use the selected program to open all file types and protocols it can open by default).

The tutorial I posted does not require you to go through the list.
It is "one click reset all ".
    Option One.

NoteThis option will reset all file type and protocol associations to the Microsoft recommended defaults for only your user account.

    1. Open Settings, and click/tap on the System icon.

    2. Click/tap on Defaults apps on the left side, and click/tap on the Reset button at the bottom of the right side. (see screenshot below)

Once you go into the Start>Settings>System>Apps & Features and hit Edge or the browse you have set as the default you then simply scroll the list of choices to see another one made the default. When first going to reinstall FF or one of the other non MS browsers or when you are prompted to download the latest and you go to put that one then you are asked to make that the default browser where I simply leave the always check box unticked since I don't need to constantly see the prompting.

One thing for certain it doesn't matter if you set another browser as the default or simply leave Edge untouched since the problem seems to be universal! Something was changed on Edge since the 14295 build came out that would explain why everyone is running into the lack of the typical preview thumbnail popup and raised button on the taskbar. But you have to remember which many still don't fully realize is that since Edge is still totally new it's still a work in progress unlike IE and all of the other browsers which have seen 30 or 40 consecutive releases over several years.

Absolutely not, David! That will reset all the defaults I have set up. It will change PDF Viewer Plus for opening PDF files to Edge; it will change my default browser Firefox to Edge; it will reset my photo app from Cyberlink to the Windows Photo app.

That has nothing to do with setting or resetting defaults for Firefox, Chrome, IE, Edge or any other app; it is simply to reset everything to what Microsoft set it to in the first place.
