Like I was saying the only beef here is simply with the Metro tiles section I found an immediate solution for before even going with Start10. With Start10 I could have but didn't want the 7 Style menu since that would be rather redundant to start with but the new 10 style only without tiles thank you! :)

On the harsh reality side MS still has to suit both hardware platforms being the one item many have failed to take into account. Having more options for customization would of course be a nice incentive without having the need for any 3rd party wares while MS generally isn't that flexible. They simply toss in their limited number of options and call it a day.

Still not able to pin stuff on the left panel and get rid of the tiles? Still non-configurable?

    Classic Shell it is.

Have you made any attempts at repair? Sounds like a bug was seen during an upgrade type install.

    Hi there
Good idea -- however please don't revert back to the "Kiddy" menu of W8 -- I Hated the endless scroll of W8 on a desktop - it's NOT a mobile phone.

I would suggest though a better most used apps is a more convenient idea than "All apps" -- especially if you have a computer with a Zillion and one apps on it.

Don't forget that you can also use Custom toolbars with your own cascaded menus - great Idea that works brilliantly. I used this in W8 to get round the hideous Non cascaded endless Scroll menu that Ms foisted on us -- luckily W8 didn't last too long. W8.1 an improvement but was a tacit admission of a major Balls Up in W8-- W10 has got Windows back on track again.

    Cheers

I actually loved 8.1 until I got my hands on Windows 10. :)

I actually like the Start menu the way it is. When MS makes the change I hope they make it customizable so we can make it more to our personal liking. :)
I agree, the start menu is pretty cool and I love it better than Windows 7, in my opinion. :)

Really wish we could get a hybrid of the Windows 7 start menu with the live tiles that Windows 8/10 has.

I use Stardock's Start 10 in favor of the new 10 version due to having the Modern without Metro tiles variant while the default for 10 leaves you staring at tiles. There was never anything wrong with the 7 Start except intended for 7.

8.1 was the "Some more progress has been made" go between stage from 8 to 10 and 10 is now where 8 should have been but MS pushed the unfinished form of dual platform OS out to keep the 2-3yr. new version schedule going that will no longer be the case. What that means is continued progress in making a working dual platform OS out of Windows as well as not simply stuffing Metro in your face turnoffs that made 8 a royal flop!

Aren't the Apps you Pin to Start or the Taskbar your most used Apps?
Recent / Frequent Apps adds no value for me.

This was true on Win7 too - the top level of the start was equivalent to Pin to Start, the 2nd level was equivalent to recent / frequent and he right hand side were system applets and user folders, on the bottom there was all programs. Vista, Win7, Win8 and Win10 Start menus aren't much different operationally, only the presentation differs.

Sure, there are puch notifications now, but I turn off live tiles - they just annoy me ... if I want to know the weather, I look out the window

Between the most used Apps pinned to the Taskbar, the Quick Access Menu (WinKey+X), keybd shortcuts I rarely go to the Start menu - perhaps for most used Apps Pinned to Start that are used less often

Ah well, the Start menu will always be a topic for discussion.

MS should buy the rights to Start10 from Stardock and include it as a choice during install or first boot. I believe more than half, probably way more than half, would opt for it rather than the current or proposed Start menu.
I agree, then you could have your menu any way you like it. Except they could add a windows 8 view.
