NO idea why all of the sudden all this sh*t is happening to me.
Let me just check that I understood you correctly:

Your latest test (preview) build you have voluntary opted to test shows a meaningless no-harm-done text when restarting or shutting down, one command does not work and a word in Start Menu kind of looks blurry first but then is shown OK. And, I almost forgot: you had to reinstall one driver.

The above means the entire thing went nuts to you? Making you wonder why "this sh*t is happening to me"?

I very sincerely recommend you to opt out out from the Insider program, use the Media Creation Tool to download the most recent official release TH2 version 1511, install it and forget any further testing. Doing it you don't have to experience this extremely frustrating, shrink-visit-demanding BS, a totally dysfunctional Windows.

While upgrading Desktop A with the new SSD hard drive, removing and replacing cables and such, I also decided to remove the Ethernet cable I'd forgotten about, thinking to see how much slower things came down from the 'net.

Everything worked fine yesterday and last night, but this morning, things lagged so bad that I couldn't even get onto TenForums. Now, that ain't a good thing for me at all! So, I plugged a newer, shorter cable into the router and then into the computer, and everything is now fine again.

I don't know what Microsoft has done, but if the above holds true with Lappy, I'm not going to be a happy camper at all.
I've noticed few problems with network in a last couple of builds. This one is OK for me . At least for now, as far as network is concerned.

But, as Kari pointed out before, this is a beta software and we are all kind of spoiled with how good it actually worked this last year.
When some new features and functionality is bringing into Windows, I think we will all be affected. Sooner or later.

    WINVER shows 1511 14291.1001
    same here :)

FWIW stability and speed wise IMO 14291 is miles ahead of the last few test builds and more like it should be :)

After all this, I guess I'll just have to wait for the next TP build.
I had to roll back an Insider build prior to 14279

OTOH 14279 was pretty unstable and performing very poorly here and tempting me to roll it back with an ISO or just boot into the 18561 th2 NTFS partition instead for my daily driving which I did sometimes .

I was contemplating installing the prior build to 14279 from an ISO I made from the WU ESD install D/L but I figured the next build that turned out to be 14291 would be coming soon .

In my case after I rolled back a test build WU worked normally to D/L the next current Insider build when it came out .

I'm having the opposite results you have ,this is the best performing test build by miles I've seen since joining Win.Insiders in Jan.2015 and I'm keeping an 14291 ISO in reserve or something after that that works equally well if I get something like the last one (14279) that performed so poorly here go figure

Speed was never an issue for me. Even on this 8 years old machine. As long as you don't play demanding games.
But stability? Perhaps it is time to do a clean install.
Typical crash, when I try to do a Snip.

    Option Two

Yes. it is still applicable to Win 10.
I used it to restore missing Network and Volume to my Win 10 at least twice.
The latest time was after I installed Insider 14291. Volume icon went missing.
Thanks for the suggestion David. But, the date/time *is* actually there, it's just so dark I can't see it.

I haven't benchmarked 14291 like all the others yet but they been getting slower with almost every build and 14291 feels significantly faster than the last several of them for a good while.

ofc it could just be improved memory compression and physical memory and HDD caching and some code optimization but U'll take that .:)

Clean install used to be the absolute rule for good performance in Windows it may be less so now in W 10 .

I'm having mostly good luck with update installs but it's good for resolving some problems that's true . I had to do it once on a test build when WU killed the OS irreparably with an automatic sound card update.

I used to clean install every other Win. Insider build but I been getting lazy and been pretty lucky lately but I make an ISO from every WU Win. Insider test build install ESD download just in case before the W U re start/ install process .

A couple of days ago I clean installed version 1511 and after the updates I brought it to version 10586.164
I logged in with my MS account and waited for the Insider build to appear. It finally arrived and I upgraded.

    Afterwards:

    - Each time I restart / shut down my computer I get a screen saying that I can return back and save my work or restart / shut down anyway, even though I have absolutely no program running.

    - SFC /SCANNOW does not function! "Windows Resource Protection Could Not Start the Repair Service", it says! Yes, I have made sure that the Windows Modules Installer service is enabled and set to Manual.

    - If I press "All Apps" from the Start Menu the first Apps shown look blurry. If I scroll down and return back up this seems to get fixed.

And of course, I had to re-install the NVIDIA driver.

After I observed all this, I created an ISO using Kari's ESDtoISO tool, and I clean-installed this TP preview build. The results are exactly the same!

I have absolutely NO idea why all of the sudden all this sh*t is happening to me. It is the first time ever I am facing such problems with an Insider build of Windows 10. I have checked my Samsung 840 PRO 128 GB SSD, the drive I use for these installations, and its status is GOOD. I haven't thoroughly tested it, though. But I am sure it has no issues.

After all this, I guess I'll just have to wait for the next TP build.
Joanne, are you running 10586 ? or the current build about which we are addressing in this dialog? I am confused. I know you have had problems periodically in the past. And, you have had video issues in the past with your screen drivers and blurriness of letters. Just trying to clarify which Preview version you are addressing.

I ended up rolling back to 279. Normally that stops the new build from being downloaded/installed via WU, but this time it keeps downloading and attempting to install the new build. Guess I'm going to have to switch to the slow ring until the next build comes out.
