BunnyJ, I agree... I have come to realise many detest Linux discussions.

(BTW there are graphical means of installing apps...Sudo is just a security measure)

As to using it over Windows 10 I would guess that at least 95% of the folks here on the t0's could care less about Linux and its workings. . .:)

If MS provide a one click option to the W7 menu, (double column, list view with jump start) ... Hell I wouldn't even bother with the free upgrade ... and I'd even accept the apps, although switched off ... and just go buy an OEM disk with product key from retail computer shop. Which I've already done with W8 and W8.1.

I just want to be able to go to the 'old' All Apps screen when I click Start.

The whole time I was on 8.1, even back in its beta days, I refused to use a 3rd-party Start program even though I'd always used Classic Shell in Win 8. I persevered with All Apps instead. I moved, deleted, created, and generally ran amok until I had just what I wanted, working just the way I wanted. I got to see the actual Start screen about 4 times, apart from the odd occasion I'd actually go there. I honestly never even bothered to begin to set up or customise the Start screen, for that reason. But I grew to like All Apps, and became quite at home with it.

Now, they've given us this half-assed Start menu back, which is fine. I don't like it, but appreciate that others do. That's fine too. What isn't fine, is that I now have no option to continue to use the All Apps screen as my start menu. Which means that I've had to re-install Classic Shell, which I hadn't needed since Win 8. I'd also have liked the option to enable/disable the charm bar.

I would rather have the choice, even if I choose not to take advantage of it, than not have the choice but want it. And the same goes for the Aero eye-candy. Some may not want it, so ship with it turned off by default. But give those who do want it the option to turn it on if desired. And, God knows, Win 10 needs some eye-candy. It's plainer than Win 2K, if that's even possible. I do like the new folder icons, though.

Just as an aside, I find it humorous that many of those (not necessarily or exclusively members of this group of forums, and I'm not pointing fingers) who derided me and others for not liking Metro initially in Win 8 are now often the same ones deriding people for wanting Metro (or parts of it) instead of or as well as the Win 10 offering. Strange, that.

Anyway, I know which method I prefer. And this new Start menu isn't it. Now, if the right pane contained All Apps instead of the Start screen...

I never disliked any part of metro .. in fact I liked it and that's why I would like to have an option to use the start screen in Win10. If I have to hack the registry then I will so I can use the start screen.

I loathed it, at first. Passionately. Never used it in Win 8, at all. 3rd-party all the way.

But, having made a conscious decision to persevere with it when 8.1 was released for testing, and having gotten it to work the way I wanted, I actually started to like it. And it started to become intuitive and 'second-nature'. I no longer had to stop and think about things, they just happened.

Now, it seems I'm to 'forget all that rubbish', and go back to a 'new' Start menu which, to me at least, is neither fish nor fowl.

I agree, the new start menu from MS is not that bad and I like the way I can set it up to meet my needs:

Maybe that's why Windows/File Explorer is only "adequate" and why it's taken a decade for MS to add virtual desktops.
