This thread boils down to basically two things.
1. Use common sense before you click.
2. Use whichever AV you trust and feel confident with.
As Lee and BunnyJ hinted :) It's starting to make my brain hurt.
FWIW Window Defender on Windows 10 is Windows 10 specific and not merely updated earlier Windows Defender and Microsoft Windows Essential programs.Night Hawk
You are most likely onto something as far as the free stuff MS offers at times. You have to remember that WD has been out now since Vista allowing MS time to work on the details quite a bit as well as continuing to see it updated. In fact when going to see the next Insider build update go on you will notice a new WD update proceeds each one! Once you get that and any other immediate updates on then the upgrade continues.
FWIW Windows defender for Windows 10 is significantly improved from earlier Windows Defender iterations prior to Windows 10 and MSE on Win 7 or whatever else it may work on .
e.g,
IOW it's all in the details you omitted maybe you should read up on it?When you start up Windows 10 for the first time, Windows Defender is on and working to protect your PC by scanning for malicious software. It will turn itself off if you install another antivirus app.
Windows Defender uses real-time protection to scan everything you download or run on your PC. Turn off real-time protection temporarily by selecting the Start icon button, and then selecting Settings > Update & security > Windows Defender.

TBH You are all right this thread is pretty well baked to the point of well overdone to burnt to a crisp ubsurdity.and in no small part from my participation and ......
FWIW when I keep seeing persistent fud posted here (not you four)
TBH I get so bored around here I reply with rebuttals and while some of those may be useful for the newbies and head banging monotonous repetition for most of us me included even reading most of my lengthy posts *here .
TBH maybe I should ignore the fud in this thread it ain't likely to ever stop if I don't and probably won't anyway !
all this is almost getting clinical .......
