reading few last post, seems people just stuck in past
intel own mcafee since 2011... and planned to drop mcafee brand since 2014

while i cant say much about mcafee in intel direction nowadays (seems their focusing in enterprise/corporate service)
but i believe it not as bad as in past owner... well intel have good reputation in their product
if in future intel making hardware+software security combo system in their intel security, it will be a new level of security which should be even better

    anyway on the topic...
for most people- kids, old person, etc. that only use their PC without ever want to know more about how things works in pc/troubleshooting, and ask/post as soon as they have issue on their PC... for them paying Internet security is recommended

for people know about PC stuff/security, geek, etc. paying internet security not worth that much, as they know what their doing on their system, and they do know that internet security isnt make their pc invulnerable anyways
plus current OS have better security compared to old OS... (win7/8/10 : winXP or older)
for these group of people, they have their own security regiment that works for them

    long never-ending loop-talk thread lol
    You said it well !
I'm good with all that in bold and above (and I'm kinda old but not PC wise ☻) I just use a minimum free AV/malware like AVG free or WD & mbam & mbam anti exploit free configurations on 4 Win 10 PC's here because like you say all that paid crap aint all that anyway if you know something IMO and if know what to do if you get had by something and back up or clean it up ............all that ain't worth paying for or obsessing about for experienced users and none of that can keep up with the maware geysers out there anyway .

2 CIO's I know personally ( one relative ) and our IT folks told me all that many years ago anyway so did anybody I ever ran across that knew anthing about computers anyway.

Some people are just beating a dead horse .............TBH I shouldn't take the bait anyway I been at this a long time and know all I Need to know about all this and and fixing a PC and ( PC OS thats worth fixing without spending days on it ) and recovering files and data if it ain't (Linux Ubuntu can recover files and folders from a Windows hdd healthy partition well if you know how ) ofc I can roll in a backup.and I keep them .

And if I don't know something I got people that do anyway if it ain't on Ten Forums or somewhere but I got tons of notepad references in folders & bookmarks for a lot of that and ofc Google search .

OTOH if you don't know maybe refer to the first paragraph slyphnier wrote here above or get a tardpad ☻

I did post earlier in this thread that there is no end to it.

Everyone has there own favourites and views on which is the best AV, Anti Spyware etc.

Think it's about time I unsubscribed from this thread before I get too old.

Some nice posts there though blutos cousin & Night hawk.

I personally think defender is better then any other free AV for the sense of active protection. I am however a big believer in paid AV as seriously is a paid subscription of $30 a year that big of a deal?

I just started using Sophos home which is free but from what I can tell provides the same functions as paid AV. Also from what I have seen with the latest reports on AV comparatives Sophos is more highly ranked then defender in security.
You are most likely onto something as far as the free stuff MS offers at times. You have to remember that WD has been out now since Vista allowing MS time to work on the details quite a bit as well as continuing to see it updated. In fact when going to see the next Insider build update go on you will notice a new WD update proceeds each one! Once you get that and any other immediate updates on then the upgrade continues.

It's not only just the novices that will find they need some good protections inplace but even the advanced user can end up being tripped up by some new malware due to there being progressively advanced malware writers constantly out there working on new things! When having left the av/firewall off during a few web searches it didn't take much to be slammed good by a clever unwanted addon! What that shows even while I was able to track it down in no time to see removed there are actual benifits to be had when having effective protections inplace. That's strictly upto you there while any other av discussion will tend to end up a battle zone of debating over which is better then what. Here I have to look at not only "what works" not just on my own gear but also have to be able to recommend to other not so pc savay users what are some of the better options. That means putting eacn new I look at through the grill not just by what is heard in some review or supposed lab results but from actual Real World time with it.

I think someone else kindly said "everyone has their own...." leaving the rest for you to decode there!

The real world findings however tend to show some program including both paid and free will have their limitations in contrast to others which in their own contrast have limitations that might just be covered by some of the others! This is what keeps that particular software category a profitable industry! The reference pointed to earlier however has been well prepared for the general public overall by some of the best in the industry as far as security specialists. The tips there can apply to anyone!

Is paying for antivirus a waste of money?-63762880.jpg

OTOH for anyone that may not know all this or anyone that does or thinks they do :

The long and short of it is
    In the real world :
You assume risk anytime you are on the web especially on a ( Windows Administrator Account ) that can present one direct pathway to nasty's from the web,(or anthing that can crawl out of a sandbox ) or from an .exe , D L .exe , or toolbar/search hijacker ,email etc. straight to the the MBR and or root drive and some these nasties can lie dormant and be remotely executed or otherwise execute whenever....... and they can sometimes replicate if cleaning doesn't get all the seeds or have keyloggers and or data scrapers remote or local and call home whenever and or make your PC a slave bott ................seen all that happen

The thing between our ears is pretty important also when on the web .

Again : And don't put strangers things in to your PC thing
especially if it ain't in a new wrapper know what I mean ?.......and if you do in any event scan it with something reliable first .

    e.g,

The root directory, or root folder, describes the uppermost folder on a hard drive partition. If your computer contains a single partition, this partition will be the "C" drive and contains many system files.
How to Display Files in the Root Directory of a Hard Drive | Chron.com

Of course a minimum of WD or instead a free resident AV program like maybe Avast or AVG free (or other) & maybe a decent real time web shield however you can get it ,( I use one but they are far from foolproof .)

Use a modern updated secure OS & web browser with Windows Firewall [ON] as it pertains to Windows along with any web browser phishing/malware protection settings and mbam free can't hurt and minimum of common sense can't hurt either

Anything beyond all that is optional IMO and *may present diminishing returns* and slow your PC down and significantly affect the boot times ,present false positives and block some legitimate things outside of anthing you may have whitelisted caveat emptor

Lastly it's impossible for the AV/Malware vendors to keep up with all the evolving threats in real time out there in a timely manner and you are probably just as likely to have an intrusion (or other) that way as not .(seen all that too! ) ...............IOW keep back ups again & caveat emptor

note : There is a very good argument for rolling in clean back up's or a format/clean install as opposed to cleaning infected hdd primary partition's
