I started to do this when I watched a video last night. However it does not change the defaults, prevent the continuous notifications (which I think mean that the defaults are still being reset) and solving the flashing icon problem!

To Lesmonts,
I do have a similar issue.
I had a message " 'an app caused a problem with the default app setting (all music and video files)". It referred to m2t and m2ts file exptensions.
See if you can change it the old-fashioned way. This is the Win 7 method and it is still applicable in Win 10.
Right click at Start > Control Panel > top right, click View by > select small or large > Default Programs >Associate a file or protocol with a program > left side, scrll down to the file extension you want to change > click it > it should say Movies and TV > top right, click Change program > scroll down to find the program you want to open with > if you don't see it, click More apps > click the program you want > click OK
See if the change will stick.
I did that method to changed m2t and m2ts to open with VLC.

I have done all the above. The installation itself was successful. My defaults for Music and Video were reset afterwards (to Groove Music and Films and TV) and I cannot get the defaults to change back to what I formally had - i.e VLC and 5K Player. Both appear in the list after clicking on the appropriate default apps but the set defaults will not change! I have reinstalled the change of apps I want but to no avail.
What is more annoying is the continuous flashing icons within the Video folders and on the taskbar as well as the continuous notifications which would not stop (I have now turned off!).
At the moment I have done a restore to before the update and disabled 'updates' but would like to cure the problems!
Hi,
I had exactly the same problem and tried everything but nothing worked. Reinstalled windows 10 after format and everything works now. No more flashing icons and messages. I think Microsoft sends out premature updates.

Thanks to everybody for their responses. It seems I have the problem as reported by Ex_Brit. At the moment I'm sticking with my system restore and disabling Windows updates until the bug is hopefully fixed!!

No problems here either. Maybe it's a false alarm.

All are having a go at what was posted as a lot of rubbish as their apps they put in have stayed as they were

Interesting read.
However everyone can self-proclaimed as expert and trumpeting past achievements without proof.
So, don't trust until it can be verified.

OK, not everybody has had the problem but I'm obviously not the only one who has! I have done a System Restore 3 times now with the Windows update to follow just to check and immediately after the updates the problems occur!!
