That's just another reason I'm glad I never use Windows regedit. I have always used Registry Workshop registered. :)
Thanks for mentioning this great program (1 min google search found a working key)

I have a problem. First, I keep getting continuous notifications that 'an app caused a problem with the default app setting (all music and video files), so it was reset to Films & Tv/Groove Music'. (Previously using 5K Player/VLC.) I cannot change either of the above default players to my own preferences (I have even tried re-installing both VLC and 5K!) When I go to my Video folder in file explorer and then into the various video programmes, all the icons start flashing continuously as well as the ones on the taskbar. I have tried uninstalling and re-installing the updates but the problems come back.

Anybody else experienced the problem or can help please?

Please confirm you are on the Win 10 build that this KB refers to, and that the installation was successful. ([settings/update and security/advanced options/view update history]

Then go to [settings/system/default Apps] roll down the list and see which Apps have been selected as the default payer.

Click on that item and see if you can change the default app to the one you wish to use. The list of players available should include the player you want to use as default if the installation of those players was successful.

I have done all the above. The installation itself was successful. My defaults for Music and Video were reset afterwards (to Groove Music and Films and TV) and I cannot get the defaults to change back to what I formally had - i.e VLC and 5K Player. Both appear in the list after clicking on the appropriate default apps but the set defaults will not change! I have reinstalled the change of apps I want but to no avail.

What is more annoying is the continuous flashing icons within the Video folders and on the taskbar as well as the continuous notifications which would not stop (I have now turned off!).

At the moment I have done a restore to before the update and disabled 'updates' but would like to cure the problems!
