I guess the main question is - is all this necessary to get the start menu back. And how come I didn't have to go through those gyrations?
The start menu is working for my 9926 installs, 1 update and 1 fresh on none enterprise versions.

I don't have the option to turn off or on.

No box to change one way or the other.

Start Screen is dead not Start Menu. The old Start Screen (like in 8.1) has morphed into something new that "to me" looks like some of both.

I don't know, I did an Enterprise install on my laptop and got the new Start Menu. I did a clean install though. Same deal on my desktop PC with the non enterprise ISO.

Nar, the Start screen is not dead yet. It's just turned off in build 9926. You can enable it again if you like. :)

Plus, it's still early. Many features can still be restored, combined, or updated before the final RTM is ready.
I set to use start screen instead of startmenu ,now when I used the windows key to go to start ,the WK will not work to go back to desktop ,I have to click on the desktop icon . edit -

Charms have been moved into the Notification tray. I don't think they're called Charms any more though.
You should see tiles at the bottom of Notifications that do much of what Charms did.
Hit the up arrow ^ in Notifications to show more tiles
