IMHO if I'm going to upgrade to a modern system I'm going to include the OS in the package. All my computers including my Windows phone is running Win 10. There are a few things I could do without in Win 10 but I'm not going back to older OS because of it. :)


edit: (wanted to add) If for some unforeseen circumstances I did have to drop back to a older OS it would be Win 8.1.

I think some of the Nay sayers are being too pessimistic.

When W7 first launched things like video streaming were in their infancy -- even Virtualisation was essentially restricted to enterprise servers and home hobbyists. Mobile phone integration had also barely started, and security was fairly primitive by todays standards. Even the hacks and scams used then look fairly amateur compared with todays much more tech savvy criminals.

We've come a long way since then. A modern OS needs modern technology to run it. You *could* run the latest OS on a really old CPU (at probably horrendous inefficiency). You could also run an old OS on a modern CPU but the amount of extra code you'd have to build into the new CPU would waste a lot of its power - if it could be done easily and economically why then then did Ms get rid of XP.

To those that say Ms is the evil empire - that's just 100% B/S. Ms co-operates hugely with people like RED HAT who provide large VDI for many Windows client desktops without any problems whatsoever --and I'll bet a load of Ms servers dishing up windows downloads are probably powered by RED HAT or similar -(these are LINUX Enterprise servers).

I applaud Ms for trying to bring computing into a fast changing modern era while still keeping the idea of a workstation alive. OK W8 was IMO a big mistake but what large corporation has never made a mistake.

I think there's a quote from "The good book" when a crowd wanted to stone some poor hapless woman for some minor sexual proclivity : --Let him who is without sin amongst you cast the first stone.

I'm actually looking forward to the next few years - we will need all the compute power we can get --AI, robotics, nano technology, micro sugery, Virtual reality, holographic projections etc -- and we will still need a human interface for all these applications.

Huge / Mega huge CPU power needed as well as even larger fast storage --the first PB (petabyte) drives can't be far off now. New file systems and algorithms for handling this type of data will also need to be developed.

Ms is beginning again to look like an exciting innovative company -- Apple while having some nice looking gear is getting decidedly long in the tooth against what Ms is developing.

Enjoy the ride --what's gone is GONE - nothing wrong though in using legacy stuff on VM's.

Except for emergencies, I wouldn't go back to Xp or Windows 7 if I was being paid to do it. I love new operating systems.

Agreed. I am very satisfied with w10. I don't understand people who avoid updating at all costs. W7 was good but w10 is way way better.

Not end of life, end of support. That's a big difference. For example, I still have a machine running XP. It's not supported by Microsoft, but works and does what it's supposed to. That's all I care about.

What exactly is better, could you give specific examples? Or better yet, define "better". Personally, I have both of them running on the same machine and I don't see 10 doing anything "better".

Well, I will name 3.
1. Better security than 7. I know you can't see this. And yes I have the privacy settings turned off for almost all apps.
2. My PC took 10 seconds to logon screen, from cold boot or restart, using Win7 Ultimate. Now Win10 Pro takes 7 seconds. 30% faster.
3. My FPS games play about 10-15 FPS faster than before.
