Microsoft shows off just how much data it’s collecting from Windows 10 users

...Microsoft felt the need to share some milestones:
    • People have spent over 11 billion hours on Windows 10 in December alone.
    • Over 44.5 billion minutes spent in Microsoft Edge across Windows 10 devices in just the last month.
    • Over 2.5 billion questions asked of Cortana since launch.
    • Around 30% more Bing search queries per Windows 10 device vs. prior versions of Windows.
    • Over 82 billion photos viewed within the Windows 10 Photo app.
    • Gaming continues to grow on Windows 10 – in 2015, gamers spent over 4 billion hours playing PC games on Windows 10.
    • Gamers have streamed more than 6.6 million hours of Xbox One games to Windows 10 PCs.

Ummmm.... many people would be surprised, if they knew how many 3rd party software developers send metadata back to them, when the software or the user checks for updates .

So, 11 billion hours on Win 10, and less than 3/4 of a billion hours spent on Edge. (44.5 billion / 60 = 741,666,666 )
Seems edge might not be all that popular. Maybe that's why they posted its usage in minutes vs. hours!

One can crunch numbers to say what the want.
But there are hundreds of Chromium based and Firefox based browsers out there, where the developers can only dream of so much use.:)

All this noise about what Microsoft is doing, yet no one seems to bat an eye about Google doing the exact same thing (and likely even worse).

We're being watched in almost everything we do. Surfing the web, Using our phones, using our credit/debit cards, the store cards. We can even be spied on when we watching tv. I was having a problem with a new Comcast DVR box not being recognized as a DVR. I called them to see if they could reset it. The first thing the tech told me was he could see that I didn't have any programs scheduled to record. I don't like it but there's not much you can do.

    Complaining for years

Google isn't trying to force users to replace their W7 or W8 series OS with W10.
People have been complaining about Google for years.
Now MS is adopting all of the worst Google tactics, so people are howling about it.

I try to avoid using any Google products/services and have been since everyone started raving about them in the early '00s.
    Unfortunately (for me):
    • They have the best image search
    • I was forced to make a Google account to complete some of my Web Design subjects

Because I have the option to not use Google's services and still have full-functionality and control over my computer. I'm not Google's biggest fan and have always been reluctant to trust them, but at least I feel I have a choice over whether I use their services or not.

Microsoft says it's transparent, but I can see right through it

Back in the dim and distant, we broke a story about how the terms and conditions for the Windows Insider program included a clause permitting a keylogger. That's not to say there was one, just that it was an option. In among the righteous indignation came a few voices saying: 'Well, it's a beta. What do you expect? They need that extra telemetry. It'll be gone in the final version.'
But it wasn't. And it's getting worse. Let's go back to that 200 million users story. Some of the other stats that I couldn't bring myself to report the other day included:

    • People have spent over 11 billion hours on Windows 10 in December alone.

    • Over 44.5 billion minutes spent in Microsoft Edge across Windows 10 devices in just the last month.

    • Over 82 billion photos viewed within the Windows 10 Photo app.

    • Gamers have streamed more than 6.6 million hours of Xbox One games to Windows 10 PCs.

....Somehow, Microsoft, as it emerges from the cocoon of the Ballmer years, still hasn't shifted its culture enough to just give straight answers to straight questions. As such, I am, like the proverbial sausage, done.
