After just having put those in I now have to consider going with an even larger pair of either 4tb or even the latest 5tb size drives or even add in a 3rd large capacity drive to take up some of the slack since both are now about 2/3rds to 3/4s full! I have files backed up as well as the system images from the second remote mini tower used for testing as well as from now a 3rd laptop to replace an older one that let go suddenly. I have to deliver the new one once I get an image from that drive as the replacement already seeing 10 for the old 7 laptop where the display simply quit.

You want to talk about the need for local storage I might have to invest in a cloud type server here!

It's not just images alone by any means but keeping up with ISO disk images for different builds as well as various softwares and updates backed up for two separate OS drives along with several Linux distros i either run on VM or make a bootable flash drive from to run those live.

Then there are new files created when using various softwares including game savs and developer mods for certain games which add up as well as working with video captures and PC screen recordings lately some posted on Youtube which take up quite a bit on the OS drives as well as backed up on the others. It all adds faster then you can imagine! This is why having a large capacity for local storage is something often missed when planning a new build out. It's simply too easy to grab the small SSD and a 1-2tb storage drive and think that is all that will be needed. But once you get into a larger number of things OOPS! I ran out of room!

One thing I never did get to was setting up a 7 Home Server which could easily handle tons of things much easier. Despite having XFinitity's Ondemand option to view shows and movies online once logged into the account nothing is ever downloaded as far as being stored locally while have the dvr option in the tuner card used not for cable only by way of an analog intermediate device like a vhs with a tuner no longer found in retail chains but a few sites online only as seen lately to replace one that went finally. The input from external sources like a digital camera or an old vhs camcorder that still works can be transformed into digital by capture as well as recording the ondemand for later viewing. That takes up space but still leaves room at the same time only ending up as a few hundred gb at best.

Long term storage and backups which include images from drives at 100-200-300gb depending on desktop or laptop and how much is on each drive will vary and still fit into a large folder without chewing up a 2tb drive. The iso images for both Windows and Linux which not only include Insider builds as well as the 10240 release and TH2 update but 7 iso images still onhand with updates and SP1 integrated are added into the mix. Likewise if you have other type of large files or numerous folders that continue to grow drive space soon becomes a commodity!

My setup for storage remains pretty simple. My main workstation has two small but spry drives (U320s), both 73 GB (I know tiny, eh?). I have an old xw6000 workstation that I still run Windows Server 2003 on (disconnected from the Internet except for scheduled MSE updates - yep, I got that working on it... lol). I only have old IDE drives (two 80 GB disks for redundant copies - I just use Bart to do manual mirrors).

The rest of my data I back up on to pairs of removable Passport drives. I have 4 TB x2 in total.

Works OK for me.

The server case I would put together with have about a half dozen 4tb Enterprise grade drives being heftier rated drives for clearing the Petabyte mark and have a common internal ethernet connection by way of auto network switch going out to each desktop. The web connection would be there not only for updates for the server OS in use but also to see direct downloads isolated from any of the desktops until scanned for malwares as well as seeing multiple layers for security put to use.

Not really.. my storage usage is an SSD at 12Gb and an HDD at 500Gb.. more than I need and I know I can just live with the SSD,
