I thought Microsoft was allowing certain businesses and enterprises to keep getting security updates for windows xp operating system. One example is ATM's(Automated Teller Machines) also called ABM's.
If you're willing to pay for End of life support, yes, you can get security updates. This is not cheap though. It's far cheaper to fix your software and hardware and roll it out.

OK. Here are a few things I can remember about beta testing for Microsoft. In England in 1997 I beta tested Windows 98. I was sent in the mail a CD and a non disclosure agreement. Anyone who found a bug that was able to be duplicated got a copy of Windows 98 when it went gold.
Indeed, and as I said, Microsoft Did give free copies to a few people, those that were involved in active beta programs. These were much smaller groups, typically on the order of thousands of participants, not millions. And yes, you did have to actually find bugs. Which for many, meant actively trying to break it. Then, writing up the reports, following up with the support staff and possibly the developers, testing the fixed code, etc... If you were in a beta program, and did not report any bugs, you were less likely to get invited into another such program.

I was in the Windows 95, 98 Office 95, Office XP and Office 2003 betas (as well as a number of development tools like SQL Server 2000) and received free copies, but I had to work my ass off for them. Things changed when they started releasing Consumer beta's and previews. These people are not beta testers in the traditional sense, since they're not required to submit any bug reports and there is no expectation of them doing much of anything.

I like trying a new OS. I bought my first PC in 1996 and every time a new OS came out I bought a new one and gave the other one to a family member. I love learning this stuff.

My Sis's husband was into computer work most of his life and she started on dos and would be still using it if her sons had not forced a windows PC on her. I will upgrade my W 8.1 laptop when 10 is released.

Jimbo45, Are you running windows 10 in a virtual machine with the Virtual Machine itself being installed on Linux?
    Running VMWARE workstation 10.0.4 / vmplayer V6 on LINUX CENTOS 7 HOST with W10 as a VM (W10 build 9879 - Enterprise x-64).
    My setup is similar:
    • Linux Mint 17.1 MATE (64 bit) Host OS
    • VMware Player 6 (it might have been updated to v7 by now)
    • W10 TP VM

VMware workstation 11.0 has problems with W10 at times -- the taskbar disappears and you can't launch anything unless you exit FULL SCREEN. Connecting USB devices also fails at times -- VM says connected but you can't access them -- so I'm staying on the 10.0.4 VMWARE release (or vmplayer 6) -- works perfectly.
I have VMware Workstation 7 installed in W7.
It can't run the W8 series, W10TP or recent versions of Linux distros (e.g. LM16).

    Well guys,

just read a bit of this topic here, not much because lack of time.

For me i do not care if i have Windows 10 or Windows 8.1, there is not much difference, i certainly will not pay for it, prefer to go back to Windows 8.1 then.

But i can see others who will certainly take the road called Windows 10, mostly for the metro that is gone.

My only problem, i will have to reinstall Windows 8.1 then and i hate that.

Should have gone for dual boot.....

agree 100%,times have changed as has beta testing .just an opinion but I think at best we will see a discount for win8.1 users .
I use win10 from time to time ,have it as a duel boot with win8.1,and will not expect a free copy of win10 just because I have it install on my computer i have yet to put it to any test ! ,I think Microsoft give away OS in small numbers , Myself I got win7pro for free as I got picked for the win7 coming out party ,got a box of party favors sent to my house ,and a $300.00 MS Store credit ,they gave out 1000 of these world wide ,I also was a MVP for a few years and the first year I got access to TechNet and had access to 10 keys for all OS on the site ,now why I or anyone would needed these 10 is anyone's guess ,but all my co-workers enjoyed using them. on and on and on .

The good part is that you can toggle the start screen. I think the full screen plus the Apps screen are easier to deal with than this hybrid Win10 start menu - at least for me who has poor vision.

    Whs.
Just curious what do you keep your screen resolution at for your desktop? I keep mine at 1280 x 720. 20 inch screen.

I also use ctrl+ or ctrl- in the browser to read text better. The only issue is for some video sites, I have to raise the screen resolution but most I don't.

    I have 1680x1050 on a 22" screen and I set my DPI to 150% - here: Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Display

In addition I often use the magnifier.
