Have any extra storage drives? That will put a monkey wrench into the works! Even with the upgrade type install extra Non OS drives will see boot files and the temp install folders placed there by the 10 installer while this wasn't the case with previous versions. The 10 installer simply gets "confused" which is one red herring found with 10.
Tried it again, still didn't work. Looks like i'm stuck on the old version for now.
Would the previous downloads / install attempts conflict with each other in any way ?

Not actually! The new replaced the old swiftly here.. You may have to plan a clean install however if you are being stalled by an extra drive or device being plugged in. Usually it will come down to only one or two things that will prove to be the log jam. Some report having run into antivirus or firewalls getting in the way.

That can't be ruled out since some softwares will end up blocking the process. When booted live from the usb or optical media you can still see an upgrade install take place without any interfernces since nothing in Windows is running! Seeing the media made up is the general practice even when only going to see an upgrade take place sometimes to repair things. This upgrade by updates now being seen however is the new kid on the block where various circumstances unforeseen like even a possible ISP factor might hamper things a bit.

When going for 10 this time around having missed 8.1 and having seen the 8 CP with 7 dual boot trash both OS installs this time around I planned on expecting to see a few clean installs take place. And not just on multiple desktops but even for one! The laptop proved that true fast enough!

The best move for you there would be simply downloading by way of the MC tool to have the Windows.iso file saved to disk in case needed again. and try it while booted live where you have the two choice of upgrade or Custom install to replace the present 10. If you want to try saving all the programs seeing the upgrade while booted live will get you past a number of possible obstacles since the upgrade by way of updates isn't getting you anywhere.

Another thing besides the 10 media that's a smart idea regardless of which build is the Recovery Drive option with an 8gb flash drive since a 4gb is too small for the recovery tools. I haven't seen any 5gb, 6gb , or 7gb flash drives since the content packed by the Windows recovery option is over 4gb. That offers live recovery options you can see to at any time before the then present 10 install has a bad day.

I had problems with the initial upgrade from Windows 7, and the fix was to take out a bank of memory from the laptop. The fall update showed some of the characteristics of my initial issue, so I did a clean install of the "new"Windows 10. Needless to say, I had to take the bank of memory out again.

Windows Update is still trying to download and install 1511.

    Ho, hum.

I just finished installing this BAD upgrade. Lost ALL links to programmes like MS Office and quite a few others.
I have ended up AGAIN with not having my network machines, other than 2 laptops, show. I thought this would be a
good upgrade but no, it has not done like it is supposed to

I would suggest planning a clean install since it may not even be the newer build at fault but something at your end! From what I have been observing once you get past the 10240 build the upgrades are far less buggy! I've already seen a number of 10586 upgrade installs as well as now planning to upgrade over an activated 10586 with the TH2 to note any differences while not expecting more then the need to reinstall a few loose apps.

I will format and start again, it seems that these updates haven't got any better over the years. I had NO issue what so ever updating from Windows 7 Ultimate but now, The TH2 release has caused many issues.
I have lost all of the MS office links, MS Money link and many other programmes which had no issues under 10240 upgrade. I have also lost machines on my network which I had issue with on my other machine with the Insider build.
I expected problems with the insider build but not with this one. Oh well?

I only lost and had to reinstall a few less important actually minor garbage apps being old freebies found on the web while the av software remained intact on the upgrade over the previous builds as I went along from 10565, 10576 to the 10586.

At the moment I will be trying out the 4 in 1 download now seen when using the "MediaCreatorTool.exe" no longer the x64 or 32bit flavors seen on two separate links but combining both editions with the option for both flavors! The 10586 being activated with a 7 product key felt good while the separate clean installed VM for the TH2 wouldn't accept it as well as blocking the DE created since it wasn't an upgrade over anything.. This test will see if the activation of the 10586 will be tranferred over as a Digital entitlement type activation now being the type of activation policy.

In the end, I took out the memory again, and the whole update process completed.

Just in case anyone thinks this is a one-off event with faulty memory or similar, I have 10 of these laptops I have to deal with.

I am quite disturbed about the integrity of Windows 10 updates and the way they are installed.
