However, Google search needs a little work, when I search for something it marks out some of my search terms which can be very annoying. Google also brings up stuff you didn't even search for. Especially when you are looking up medical stuff.
That extra stuff you're getting is called paid advertising, Groze. I don't like it either, but it's a necessary evil.

Don't forget how a lot of internet searches work .

Although Google checks the entire content of the website and adds the relevant information to it's database, it still, along with all other search engines, checks the Keywords section of each page/site.

These keywords are entered by the website designer, and can sometimes not be relevant to the actual page content, (especially "medical" sites ), and even google can be fooled by the use of NoRobots and other Tags.
@GROZE sometimes Google Search and others will StrikeThrough certain words from the search to show that they were not found in the database with a relationship to the other words in a search. Its also used to show that things such as the and etc are excluded as they are too common

Am I missing something here? What does Google search have to do with support techs telling users to uninstall Windows 10?

Well, most of them could be replaced by search engines. Forums too, you can't search for almost anything without finding a forum that deals with it.

Barman58 you are correct. I don't know if you experienced this. When Google strikesthough one or more of those words you will get some strange results. You used to able to force google to search for certain words by using the plus symbol +sample search but that doesn't work now.

    Agreed.

The results often list pages that don't contain any of the search terms, despite showing them on the Search Results Page summary!

I've seen sites where the keywords were maybe 20 or thirty of the same word, Microsoft for example, and the site had no relation to MS.

Of course the NoRobots tag was set so the Search Spiders just read the first page,(often a non text page),.

As a result the entry for that site was extremely biased and resulted in it showing high on any search containing Microsoft.

Modern search engines are now aware of these simple trips but other more sophisticated code is available to do a similar job.

    Hi there

A lot of people usually get into more trouble than they need to when using search engines because they don't formulate a search query properly or efficiently. Formulating a search query correctly is a lot more complex than one might think - and on the other side of the equation - doing a search on a database using FREE TEXT is also a complex algorithm - just look at places like the European Patent office for example or some legal searches so it's not only google.

I'm sure you've got colleagues who have had trouble finding the correct answer on google while you've been able to find it almost instantly.

I reckon since search engines are such a part of modern life there ought to be classes taught in Schools about how to formulate queries decently and use these.

As far as advertising is concerned that's just a fact of life - my advice is to simply ignore it -- and to ALL NON AMERICANS -- please BOYCOTT BLACK FRIDAY -- do not buy ANYTHING on that day - apart from public transport if you have to go to work.

I don't want to stop Americans from "Enjoying" if that's the word their of their tradition but in Europe we don't want or need Black Friday --the whole Xmas marathon is long enough anyway without adding yet more misery to the whole process.

    Cheers
