Oh my bad. Did I miss anything? You can now do direct installation of Windows 10 using Win 7 or 8 key without doing an upgrade first?

Downloaded and burned ISO. Fresh install, used Win7 Pro key. Best install yet.
How did you get the ISO? or create the ISO?

If you're an Insider, you can grab the ESD file and create the ISO as per @Wynona 's instructions a few posts back. Otherwise, you should wait for it to be released to the general public, and then the ISOs will be available for download from MS.

How do I download the ISO of threshold 2? Or will the media creation tool that I can get from Microsoft automatically create a usb with threshold 2 on it?
I'd like to do a clean install using that on an older laptop that has a windows 7 pro key, instead of doing an upgrade.
Create your own ISO image and burn it to a DVD or a Flash drive as Wynona told you earlier:

Build 10586 (th 2 without watermark) is probably not available as an ISO yet. You'll have to create it from the install.esd file within the update to Build 10586.

The media creation tool is for the RTM Build 10240, I believe. However, I'm pretty sure that once Microsoft releases the next version of Windows 10, the media creation tool will convert to that version.

Now you are ready to go and you can clean install Windows 10 to your laptop using your Windows 7 product key (using Windows 7 or 8.1 key to activate Windows 10 works only in Build 10565 and later).

You can't. You have to go through an upgrade path first using your Windows 7 key. And then you can do clean installs all you want after that.
Yes you can, since Build 10565 it has been possible to use a qualifying Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 product key to activate Windows 10 on a clean install. See the tutorial for more details: Activate Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

I have also posted about my own tests regarding this matter: Announcing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 10565 - Page 18 - Windows 10 Forums

    Not you, Robot!

If you look at my post, you'll see that there was no second paragraph quoted (because at that time there was none). Then look at your post and there's a second paragraph quoted (must have been added later). That's what I was talking about.

However, if I'm not mistaken, you can upgrade from Windows 7 or 8.1 by . . . drum roll please . . . here are instructions for a clean install without upgrading:
