I thought Windows Media Player has always supported MKV format and

if VLC and MPC-HC and other players can handle all of the formats, why can't Windows Media Player?
    Hi there

I think some of the issues might be "Copyright" - for example playing commercial DVD's requires the use of a decryption algorithm. In SOME (but not all) jurisdictions a royalty fee is payable for the use of this algorithm. VLC has AFAIK reverse engineered it -- totally legal in some countries) and therefore can be downloaded FREE.

Things like FLAC for example are open source but there are other proprietary codecs that require the use of either "licenced" libraries or Non open source facilities which might require a royalty fee.

If WMV hasn't "coughed up" then it's no go for playing those codecs -- Ms can't put itself in the same category as VLC and other "Quasi Legal" players.

(Now whether or not this whole area SHOULD be open source - and the whole ridiculous regionalisation thing for DVD's be abandoned is another issue !!).

    Cheers

Isn't MKV open source? So, I find this a weak argument. And I hardly think anyone considers VLC and MPC as "Quasi Legal" players. Besides Media Center handles other formats. So all the "Copyright" mumbo jumbo (not to be confused with Jimbo), just doesn't set right by me.

Surely, Microsoft has the collective smarts to write their own Codecs.

    About time.
I guess it'll be good for novices.

Now, they need to add .flac, .tta, .ape, .wv, .ogg, etc.

Even if they do add them, I won't use their application anyway.

I just tried running a .mkv file using Media Player in Win10 9860 and it does not run. I get the error message but hitting close and trying it again, it still fails. Anyone actually get this to work? My .mkv came from Handbrake.
I normally use Media Player classic.

MPC-HC & VLC are a little twitchy in my W10 TP VM.
I suspect it has to do with the graphics driver I have (or maybe I don't have) in LM17.

Simply clicking on an mkv file does not work. I had to install VLC to preview the files. Mkvtoolnix works rather well. No difference from Windows 7.

I never actually watch these videos on my PC - my Blu-Ray player does that job and the couch in front of the big screen is much more comfortable for watching videos

The XBox One has become my goto home entertainment media player. I stuck a 3TB Seagate hard drive into a Rosewill RX-358 USB 3 Enclosure and put my moview and a bunch of TV shows on it. With voice command of "XBox On" I can turn on the console, A/v reciever, and TV, start up the Media Player Preview, choose the USB drive, select a category, and pick a movie. start it, stop it, or pause it, all by voice commands. 1080P, 5.1 surround sound, and excellent picture.
I am STARTING to use Dragon Natural Speaking 13 to control my PC using the mic on my webcam. Will voice take over from touchscreens?

I just tried it and it does play MKV file without installing anything else.

(Note: The video plays smoothly. The "jumping" video below is just because of the recording.)

I have video clips that won't play in one or the other of those players, so I need both.
Out of personal interest, which video formats can't be played in VLC? All these years I have used it I have never found a video which VLC can't play, out of the box.
