Indeed, so why bother installing K-Lite Codec pack at all? I install only MPC-HC standalone.

I find SPlayer Portable plays HD content quite well including MKV. Afaik though, when playing HD stuff with PGS Subs you are limited to WMP, VLC or messing with the subs yourself to get some other standard format such as srt.

The problem is that some videos can't be fast forwarded (playback speed, chapters or dragging the progress bar) without the playback stopping for up to 5 minutes (or more)!
Those same videos don't have that issue in VLC.

That’s why I have both installed in W7 (currently I only have MPC-HC installed in W10 TP).

The last time this occurred I monitored what was happening using Process Explorer.
By the time I was fed up with waiting, MPC-HC had read 3GB from the HDD (the file was ~500MB).

Still things aren't as bad as 8 years ago when I was using XP.

IIRC, I had 6 different players installed (including WMP10, Real, GOM, DivX, I cant remember the names of other players).
It was the only way to ensure that I could play the majority of video files that were on the Internet.

Once I installed the K-Lite codec pack (with MPC-HC) I was able to eliminate most of the other players.

One of the first HD players I found that allowed the slider to move effortlessly even in MKV was Splash Lite

I used to harp on their forum about lack of PGS subs support. They said it would only be in the Pro version, never Lite. But in the feature list in the link it says embedded PGS subs. If so it may be worth a look.

Like all these things - just use what you like. VLC does have the advantage that the UI and behaviour is identical whether you use it on a Computer (running EITHER LINUX or WINDOWS -- don't know about Mac but there's probably a mac version too), a tablet or a Phone. VLC is incredibly good for AUDIO too -- also does COMMERCIAL DVD's (Libdvdcss descryption is already included), and can STREAM too -- good for smart TV's or even "Bog standard" TV's connected via any sort of input device.
