I have Win 10 in VMware Player and the download for the 9860 update took me apx 10 minutes.

In Virtual Machine Settings I set the network adapter to Bridged.
I had some issues with NAT before.

Yeah, that file should have downloaded a lot quicker than 12 hours. Check the file and make sure it's complete and intact.

Could the VM cause this if I have something wrong, although in general in works as well as 8 internet speed
Wait... you downloaded it through a VM? I'm not expert in VM, but that may have been part of the issue.

Anyway being that it took so long check that the file is complete and intact.

BTW where did you download the file from? - Could be a factor.
    Thanks

I have Win 10 running in VMWare Player (main machine is Win 8.1)
Was wondering whether the VM is somehow throttling the download, although I would have thought this would effect more people
The download was done from the PC settings app, check for new builds option
I assume it completed ok as I have now got the latest build of 10 running fine, no problems with it

When I downloaded the initial version of 10 from the improvement program it took about 5 to 6 hours, that was a 4GB file (that's the type of speed I would expect), I downloaded this using IE in Windows 8.1

will try doing some more downloads from 10 tomorrow see if I can find out what is going slow

I am new to using VM's so not sure if the host can have control over the bandwidth it uses
    For clarity,

I downloaded the initial 10 review here: Download Windows 10 Technical Preview for Enterprise from my desktop. I then installed VMware Player and installed 10 on it. When the new 10 build came out I just updated to it using these procedures (Blogging Windows). It tells you to go to go to: PC Settings, Update and recovery, Preview builds and click the Check Now button to go get it now. The whole download/install procedure took about 20 minutes.

And yeah, the procedure was done through VM, but I also have high speed cable so if there was a slowdown, I didn't notice.

    Peace

That's a good idea. Thanks for the tip.

I have WTP installed as a WMware Player VM.
    Update installed with no problems.

The update broke my shared folders.
I had 2 shares, can get one working by diagnosing, but can't get the other one to show up...
I did a clean install with the 9860 ISO.
The VM shared folders work correctly.

Did you have to change any other settings when you did that, when I clicked on the Bridged button I lost Internet connection although I don't know if it would have come back if I left it a bit longer, as soon as it lost it I switched back to NAT:

No, I didn't have to change anything else.
For me NAT is much slower, and I had a lot of errors with Windows Updates.
That was testing Windows 8.x, and I haven't used NAT since then.

With Bridged I get the same performance in Speedtest for the Host and the Guest.

You might need to restart the VM after making the change to Bridged, or make the change while the VM is powered off.
I always select Bridged now when I'm creating a new VM.

    I have at&t Uverse with a 2Wire Gateway.

I tried this and a Windows 7 VM and neither will connect to anything using Bridged. I have to use NAT.

I just switched to NAT and that works for me.
Takes 5-10 seconds to reestablish a network connection.
Switched back to Bridged and that works for me, again 5-10 seconds to reestablish a network connection.
No restart of the VM needed for these changes.
