I can just see the consumers face when the sales person tells them that to actually use the device they will have to sign up for a subscription service, will that be Visa or Mastercard?. Or they get it home and OOBE prompts for a payment method.
I believe TiVo Is that way trying to break even for a number of years. Xbone1 started to try full time internet in order to work M$ had to back peddle on that one.

Maybe the next generation of machines will come with built-in credit card readers.

That will be $2.56 for the next 60 minutes of use please? Debit and all major credit cards accepted, please proceed to the Microsoft Store App for payment. Can we interest you in a bundle with Office 365?

Kidding aside, there would be people that would sign up for this. They might bitch about it but they'd sign up anyway. Eventually buying a PC could be like buying a cell phone. With the service contract that comes too....

Since when has OSX been a free, no cost upgrade?

If you're referring to iOS, they actually did charge for new versions back in the early days.. but they found people got really mad that they had spent a premium on the hardware and then got nickeled and dimed over the OS.
OSX Yosemite is free to anyone, you can install it onto your windows machine with VMPlayer to take it on a test run.

    here is a tutorial link

Install OS X Yosemite 10.10 On VMware on Windows PC (Download links) - YouTube

or you can Hackintosh it, here is a link showing how to install directly on to your PC

Seems I will belong to minority in this matter, too. I signed up for Office 365 subscription based model as soon as it was possible and if ever possible, will do the same with Windows. I simply cannot find any cons in it from consumer's / user's point of view.

Windows 10 for free ? huh! I don't think so, neither it should be. Microsoft will put them in loss if they do that. Also, I don't find any reasons for what Windows 10 upgrade should be free?? According to preview, I don't feel consumers will mind paying for Windows 10..
There is already a thread similar to this Free Windows 8 to Windows 10 Upgrade Useless, PC Makers... . It will be pretty useful for knowing others opinion. According to me, They should not release for Free!!

When all their competitors software is free, I think they will be forced to make some concessions. I believe the day of Microsoft charging $100+ for their OS is behind them, and I see nothing compelling about Windows 10 to make me think otherwise.
