I keep all of my protections updated, I just do not need windows updates to do that. I don't use IE so no need to update it. I stopped using Windows Defender because I needed protection that did not come with updates. I have never had a virus until I was prepping my laptop for W 10 a couple of months ago. It would not have mattered if I had been using windows updates. It was a bad download site. I got rid of it without asking for help anywhere.

You may as well drop this because I know what I am doing.

    Emma,
The problem with you not updating means that you do not have recent security/virus/malware protections and it makes this DEFINITELY not just your problem. It allows your computer to become compromised and/or infected in ways that you can transfer to friends, companies and associates on the internet and through emails, etc! The fact that you've noticed no issues on your machine does not mean that you're not causing issues for others!

Just My $.02 & Likely Worth Even Less,
    Gene

I find it extremely unlikely that Emma means that she has not installed any critical security updates over the last two years , installing all critical security patches on an ongoing basis is usually the first thing you learn when being introduced to computers and is necessary to keep a computer harm free as you already know .

Just because a computer runs well means nothing , todays rootkit's are purposely designed to hide malicious activity and many don't see or notice any issues at all , not installing the latest security updates is a surefire way to get a compromised computer.

In other words , ALWAYS check and install security updates , other updates you can do with as you wish but not the security ones.

MS released critical security patches again just two days ago to patch Windows kernel vulnerabilities , curious how you can not use Windows update to patch these . What do you use to patch those vulnerabilites

Oop's never mind , on the wrong forum again , critical security patches were released for Win 7 i don't know about Win 10 .

    Sorry folks

Think I rely on WD? Never in a million years would be the correct answer on that one! IE has to be used for certain places while that isn't even the default notw seen in 10. MS hid that away to promote Edge which is sadly lacking in various things for he present time. Years before they had the MS Antispyware remover which did a little bit but nothing to write home about! The av software here not only includes a firewall to replace the one seen in Windows but filters the web as far as detecting questionable sites and then blocks the pages.

My evaluation of 10 so far is much like 7 was back when still in the Release Candidate stage where everything ran well but some things were still needing to finished before the Oct. 2009 launch. Likewise I suspect the freebie now being seen is geared to get more people involved in testing 10 without even realizing it before the July 2016 fixed build is then a strictly paid for. This time the secret of course was a more wide scale approach with MS claiming to want to see 10 become the best Windows ever.

If we didn't have Windows, we would have to complain about Linux.

Well even with Windows we never seem to have enough to complain about until MS steps in with something new!

This one is certainly "making the cake" alright even compared to first hearing about 8 a few years ago! This time instead of the "Mobile OS" label 8 got rapped with fast we now have the "Secret MS Mission Improbable" to figure out with how things are now going to be done! The latest Insider build now allows you to use your 7 or 8 product keys as a new twist just seen.

I figured it would prove to be something lame! And you saw a few pages back the Optional wasn't so "Optional" afterall when the second unexpected failed to upgrade screen message came up when going to check for update.

It never fails however that whenever MS tries to introduce anything new it takes a few versions to get it right!

Thank you for posting that, love it. They tried to update mine and I have W update disabled. Nothing optional about it.
