I didn't see after a little Google search that the recovery partition had to be after the OS partition for the KB to apply. Except In the tutorial to resize the partition it says "This requires your device to have the recovery partition after the OS partition. Use the steps below to verify this.". But I think you need to understand to be able to resize the recovery partition with the Microsoft tutorial, the partition must be just after the OS partition otherwise it will not work. But if you resize the recovery partition with minitool partition wizard, the recovery partition can be found anywhere on the OS disk, it will be possible to resize it, and the KB will also apply whatever the location of this recovery partition..

    1) I shrank my renamed WINRETOOLS partion by 750-522MB= 447MB to get a round number of 750MB
    2) Then selected part #4 that is WINRETOOLS
    3) Then tried to delete the WINRETOOLS so that I can recreate it using all 750MB, but this says its in use - by what?
    Code:
    DISKPART> list part

      Partition ### Type Size Offset
      ------------- ---------------- ------- -------
      Partition 1 System 100 MB 1024 KB
      Partition 2 Reserved 16 MB 101 MB
      Partition 3 Primary 499 GB 117 MB
    * Partition 4    Recovery           522 MB   500 GB
      Partition 5 Primary 150 GB 500 GB
      Partition 6 Primary 150 GB 650 GB
      Partition 7 Primary 150 GB 800 GB
      Partition 8 Primary 2625 GB 950 GB
      Partition 9 Primary 149 GB 3576 GB

    DISKPART> del part

    Virtual Disk Service error:
    The device is in use.
The selected volume or partition is in use.
To continue with the operation use the OVERRIDE parameter.
4). Ran "delete part override" and was successful.Tb
    5) I can't use diskpart to create the partition in the this unallocated space. Thus using acronis director 12, it shows
.976GB (976MB there abouts). The tools says 999MB when trying to create a basic volume here. After creation of the volume with the Label of WINRETOOLS the free space is 999.7MB basic GPT.
    1) 750-522MB= 447MB ? The result is 228 MB. You have to shrink Partition 3 by 228 MB to get 750 MB
If you shrink Partition 3 by 447 MB you get 969 MB for Partition 4
0,976 GB ==> 1000 MB .That is close to your 999,7 MB
    2. If you delete Partition 4 you loose your WinRE.wim
    3. ... but this says its in use - by what? ==> WinRE. wim is protected
    4. You can use diskpart to create a partition in the unallocated space. Acronis was not needed!
The whole procedure can be managed by diskpart and takes 10 minutes

My advice: If you don't know what to do, then leave it

    @Pentagon - 1) 750-522MB= 447MB ? The result is 228 MB. You have to shrink Partition 3 by 228 MB to get 750 MB
If you shrink Partition 3 by 447 MB you get 969 MB for Partition 4.
Sorry that was an error on my part. I shrank drive C OS partition which is partition 3. I've corrected my entry.

I was able to get the KB # to install, and to goto winre via the recovery options via my login account.
So the only thing left is the other "location" entries in reagentc /info.

I used the free version of AOMEI Partition Assistant to shrink my C partition and expand the recovery partition, then when I retried the update it was successful. It was pretty painless overall. It took about 12 minutes, but the only reason it took that long is because the "checking partitions" phase of shrinking C took 10 minutes or so.

@SteveB - So no deleting the recovery partition is needed since after expanding the partition, it remembers the partition recovery settings, and disk contents by moving things around in terms of the start sector for the expanded partition (could always defrag it too)? This would mean no reagentc is needed since the guid for the partition didn't change and wouldn't need to be enabled since it was already enabled.
This also assumes one has correct content on the partition to begin with vs. some of us who have messed up recovery partitions that don't seem to work.

f you don't use Bitlocker and you use a 3rd party encryption tool instead, you shouldn't care about this KB5034441 Security Update, right?

It's as annoying or even more annoying than enlarging the partition with the Microsoft tutorial. And those who have the recovery partition at the beginning of the disk may want to move it after the c: partition, this can be done easily from the command line at the same time as Microsoft's tutorial.

We have three Windows 10 computers in our little community computer lab. Two are identical HP minis and the other is a Lenovo laptop. The two HPs have 980mb Recovery partitions. The Lenovo has a 1000mb partition. How big do we have to make these things? Here is the layout:

    HP Minis
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Partition ### Type Size Offset
    ------------- ---------------- ------- -------
    Partition 1 System 360 MB 1024 KB <EFI Partition>
    Partition 2 Reserved 128 MB 361 MB <Reserved area>
    Partition 3 Primary 222 GB 489 MB <OS (C:) Partition>
    Partition 4 Recovery 980 MB 222 GB <Recovery Partition>
    Partition 5 Primary 14 GB 223 GB <HP Recovery Image>
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Lenovo Laptop
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Partition ### Type Size Offset
    ------------- ---------------- ------- -------
    Partition 1 System 260 MB 1024 KB <EFI Partition>
    Partition 2 Reserved 16 MB 261 MB <Reserved>
    Partition 3 Primary 212 GB 277 MB <OS (C:) Partition>
    Partition 4 Primary 25 GB 212 GB <Lenovo Recovery Image>
    Partition 5 Recovery 1000 MB 237 GB <Recovery Partition>
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
