Yes, it was always a slow poke 'puter.
Linux was my first thought to install as it will run on almost anything. I was hoping for an outside chance of using 10 but looks like a not so go.

I want to keep it usable as it is my emergency back up 'puter.

Mint 9 is fabulous with older hardware. The newer editions of mint are getting bloated and might not run well on 32 bit hardware. Here's a link to mint 9. you should burn it to a cd and try it live. I use it all the time for repairs when the os just wont boot.

Pretty good actually but the 32bit version lacks some of the speed of the 64bit. Not sure why as I tested them both in a vm with Identical specs other that the bit version. 2gb ram and single core seems ok but pokish. On a live machine might be ok. you could set up a flash drive with several different versions of Linux and run them live to see how the hardware reacts. I have Ubuntu 14.04 on a flash drive I use in the field but I am planning on trying Knoppix rescue soon.

Looked at them now and Ubuntu 14.04 LTS is looking good.
Think I will dual boot it.
Where do I find the system requirements for it, I don't spot them on their site ?

Great, thank's for the link and running a test of it.
It will be my project for Sun. morning. Think I will D/L it on this machine to save time.

A couple of years ago I put Ubuntu 9 something on a HP desktop and it was pretty quick compared to XP.
