I have a ruined OS on this desktop, but on the "old" desktop it has continued to happily install all the updates so is now up to 19042.746 without me having to do anything!

This desktop still runs the 19042.388 that somehow got installed but rejects everything after that as I have documented elsewhere. But all my programmes work without problems

It strikes me that if I could copy everything from the old HDD with AMD to the new SSD with Intel then I would then have a new desktop without its current problem. Does anyone have a method of doing that they could recommend?
(Obviously using either Wifi or external storage. Or NAS?)

PS It could of course happen that MS will extract its collective head from the proverbial sand, but there is no sign of that happening

If you are suggesting cloning the Windows 10 install from an AMD build to an Intel build... don't do that.
They will be running different drivers, and even somewhat different updates (even though they might have the same KB number).

The proper method would be to do an In-Place Upgrade on the computer that's stuck on 19042.388
Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

Here is the short version of the In-place upgrade tutorial...

    DISABLE non-Microsoft:
    a) antivirus software
    b) firewall software
    c) drive encryption software

Make a full OS backup with a program like Macrium Reflect (free)
Macrium Software | Macrium Reflect Free

Go here and get the Media Creation Tool and save it to your desktop.
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

RUN the Media Creation Tool and use it to: Create an ISO image... save IT to your desktop.
This will be the latest version of the ISO image.

Right click the ISO image and choose: MOUNT
Open File Explorer and you will see a new drive letter. It will look like a DVD optical drive.
Double click the new drive letter to open it.
Find setup.exe and double click it to start the in-place upgrade.

Choose the Keep personal files and apps option.

After it's all done... to UNmount the ISO image, right click the new drive letter and choose: EJECT.

The ONLY thing you will lose is some of your personalizations. Your programs and data will be intact.

    /edit

I've done this myself, when my computer wouldn't update from 1909 to 2004.
Haven't had any problems since then.

KB#4598242 on 20H2 just installed successfully. No errors. Are you guys sure that your system is not corrupt ? Run a dism restorehealth & sfc /scannow & chkdsk C: /F /R to be sure. Also maybe reset WU.

I presume that the Reflect file is just a precaution? Nothing specifically to do with the ISO operation?
I have AOMEI backup installed and that makes automatic backups of System, Data and emails on set days.

By the way, I had asked Intel Support for ideas and they told me I should upgrade BIOS to a later version which is described as "Support 20H1" which I should do first I guess.

Done all those and documented results more than once since August and no change in the basic problem.

Your automatic backup are not the same as a Disk/SSD Image that MR is recommend for although it could be is set to create a full Disk image. This is recommended for your Recovery should the IN place Upgrade/Repair Upgrade process should fail.
Cant hurt to upgrade BIOS good idea if Intel recommends it and your Computer manufacture has such an upgrade
Back to Aomei have you actually tested a Disk/SSD or even A Partition Restore to verify that it can in Fact restore a Booting OS? If yes then you are safe, if not you should verify that your Image Back up program actually works Only that way are you assured that your are properly backup and safe
If all attempts to repair your OS so that it can update have failed , then an In place upgrade/Repair is the next step. After that you only have a Clean Install to solve your issue of not being able to Run WU

You can also just use dism capture for full partition backups if you don't want to rely on 3rd party tools. The new ESD compression is very good. I have to add though, it is somewhat dificult to manually restore dism images. It helps to write a few scripts so one can just run them if it is for the same computer, same partition layout.

Macrium Reflect or AOMEI Backupper are nice 3rd party options. I can recommend those too.

I have no idea then, what could be wrong. At this point I recommend a full reinstall. Did you do that too?

No. Last year I decided I could at last afford to buy a higher spec. desktop and was very pleased with its performance. I spent many hours carefully installing all my programmes and settings and after some time could at last settle back and enjoy it. Even got used to Win 10!

Then after only a few months the fault appeared with absolutely no backup anywhere from MS. At first I thought it was me, but then discovered the same reports on several threads in this forum, on other forums, and reports in magazines. Still no comment/help from MS.

As the desktop still works well and all my programmes still work I do not fancy the chance of wrecking everything by having to reinstall everything, so like others, I am just sitting tight until the fault gets a repair (patch?) or just goes away. Obviously I will try any odd ideas I hear about, but not go back to scratch with no certainty of success.

Yes. It's always good to have a backup before doing something like an In-Place Upgrade. (Aomei backup would work too)

The In-Place Upgrade (post #231), fixes most if not all Windows issues, AND leaves your programs and data intact.

As for the BIOS upgrade... just check for the various BIOS versions at your motherboard manufacturer's website.
They always have a little description of what they.... help with.
Also, Intel support probably knows what they are talking about.

Since PC is working, then dont worry about a dumb update. MS mayfix the update someday so it works. As long as other updates work your fine. Life is like a triage, you have to prioritize what you do and not waste time on things that dont matter so much.

It was Intel Support that suggested I update BIOS and the support assistant gave me the link to Acer's own version of the file download. So that covers both your points - good!
