You know, they have these nice privacy FAQ's, but the fact is they're collecting a lot of information. What happens when the Feds come knocking at their door, saying we need to see some of this stuff. They'll cave - they always have, and they always will. It's just phoning home too much for me.

I did the Windows update Group Policy Edit. Now I get a notification saying "You need some updates" "Select this message to install". Clicking the notification opens Windows update showing the update(s) and a Download button. So far its just been Defender Definition updates listed. It looks like one side effect from doing this is Defender will not update automatically. I click download and it downloads an installs. I don't know what happens if there are multiple updates, and whether you can pick and chose what ones get installed. Off topic I know, but somebody already mentioned/asked about in this thread.
No, you can't select/deselect individual updates.
But at least you can choose when they get downloaded.
I'm on a 15gb/month limit, and due to downloading Win 10 and its associated updates at the end of July I have just spent the last 2½ weeks stuck at dialup speed (64kb/sec). In this situation, the very LAST thing I need or want is MS pushing mandatory updates at times of their choosing.
This is also why, although a long-time Insider, I don't take new builds through the Insider program, but use ISOs (downloaded on a mate's unlimited connection) to install new builds.

Ok, thanks for that. I'm debating just switching it back so defender updates in the background. There isn't a whole lot to be gained for me leaving it this way. Had to test it though.

People, please quit whining about privacy settings on Windows 10, YOU CAN disable that, just take the time during setup of after it to change all the settings to off... simple.
Telemetry can be disabled if that concerns you a lot, and no, you don't need a bunch of batch files and scripts, if you are good enough, you can navigate through Task Manager and disable Customer Experience and Aplication Experience related stuff, that disables telemetry.
Because a lot of people started this paranoid trend, even myself believed in this for a second (and posted stupid stuff), stop spreading this paranoia, this is just like Google privacy settings, just disable al history logging and you will be OK...
About the "using your internet" thing... just turn that off, is just MS trying to speed up things by using you as a P2P (which can be abusive if you ask me).
The problem =
When everything is turned off it still have a lot enabled what you by default can't disable!
The OS is still sending data to it's servers! This even more than it ever was before with past OS.
I see that as a valid complain. Microsoft should bring out an update to remove all spying/data collection files and programs!
On windows 7 at least you can hold those telemetry updates from install.

To all of you who have issues with security then here is how to solve that problem. . .unplug the internet cable from your computer, then call Your ISP and tell them to shut off your Internet connection. Next ensure that you have no WIFI connection. . .then just maybe no one out in the wild world will be able to see what it is that you are doing with your computer. . ."Whew" that should do, otherwise guess what. . .

This is outright Scary!!! I'm thinking to switch back to Win 7 now. Can experts here on the forum come up with guide to disable such "data collecting" processes? I have everything switched off for now, but collecting everything from key press, touch, video to voice is plain "PIRACY of FREEDOM"
@Lee - I'm not sure how you use your PC, but imagine you use net banking and everything you do on your PC is recorded and shipped to MS (or other) servers across the globe. What happens when these servers get hijacked? Remember the Sony fiasco?

I understand you have a license to use the operating but that does not give Microsoft the right to control hardware that I plugged into my own computer. I purchase the hardware & the computer, so I have the right to use it with any system as long as it doesn't break my countries laws or regulations.

I suspect it's legalize nonsense. Just in case there is ever such a thing as Microsoft-authorized hardware, we give Microsoft the right to lord over it and take action against us or it if we dare to use equivalent unauthorized hardware. If Microsoft wanted to, the EULA could prohibit us from using non-Microsoft drivers for anti-gravity peripherals. Doesn't mean there will ever be such a thing.
