When they say merge, if one has listened closely, is that they will all be built from the same Windows NT core. Which means almost all prior versions 98, XP, 2000, Vista, 7 and 8 were built using variants of the NT core. But now, there will still be different versions but they are to have the same NT core. At least that is my understanding.

So really the new core, I suspect, will have variations from of all the past models. Gee, my explanation almost sounds like double-speak.

I wrote "Windows 7 fuctionality", that does not mean a Windows 7 clone. I don't mind change if it is an improvement. Windows 8 was not an improvement!
Windows 8/8.1was an improvement to many, just not you. . .

And based upon the sales of Windows 8 it was not widely accepted.

Windows 8/8.1 was considered an utter failure to many, just not you...

Personally, I consider Windows 8/8.1 more as a step sideways....

The merge is between Windows Phone OS, Windows RT and Windows, not with past operating systems. That's my read on it anyway. They will all be under the one division instead of independent divisions like they are now. That way any changes made will be across all three platforms. A unified user experience across all devices. Oh and Windows 98 was not based on an NT kernel. You were somewhat correct in saying almost all. There were a few non NT based operating system released by Microsoft in the early years.

If I wanted my OS to look and work like Windows 7 I'd be running Windows 7. I don't and I'm not. I didn't like Windows 8.0 but 8.1 and update 1 fixed what bothered me. More of the same please?

Based upon the sales of Windows 8 and 8.1, I doubt it will be the same. Currently I am running Windows 7 because of my dislike of the Windows 8 interface. I hope Windows 9 is fresh and innovative with a usable desktop interface, and not like Windows 8.

I may as well post this here since it's along the same line.

    Microsoft's Nadella Gets It
    Summary
•On Microsoft's earnings call, CEO Satya Nadella announced that MSFT will pursue a single converged Windows OS for all devices from desktop to mobile.
•While strong in the enterprise, MSFT faces losses in its mobile device activities and a “perfect storm” for its Windows ecosystems.
•The bet on a single converged OS represents a risky but necessary attempt to leverage its current Windows user base to create a viable mobile ecosystem.
