Yesterday I updated only one system and Cortana was hosed. CPU was at 34% just for Cortana and clicking on the search Icon in the taskbar opened a blank page. It had updated with no problems and SFC was clean.

I uninstalled KB4512941 and I am happy back on 18362.295 and all is well.

I have delayed updates until Sept 21 on all my systems to see what happens on Update Tuesday on Sept 10.

    Happy Trails,
    Jim

    Good morning.
Since this update is causing me problems with the search for cortana, and is reported as "optional".

I ask if you can indicate me some links, if any, where to find the registry key to disable the optional updates to not see them displayed.

There is also a temporary procedure to solve the problem, but I prefer to wait for the next "mandatory" update.
    The procedure is this:
    1. Before installing the KB4512941 update, back up the "cache" folder.
    which is in the path:
    "C:\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy"
in a local directory (for example, D: Backup):

    2. then install the cumulative update KB4512941, go to the path:
    "C:\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy"
and delete the "cache" folder, to replace it with the previously copied.

    Thank you

I have also restored back to my image created just before the update and will stay on 18362.295 until this is sorted by MS. what a load of BS though..

I tried the temporary procedure and it still makes the CPU go to 34% and causes all sorts of issues. slowing down and slow responses with the start menu and more....I have elected to restore back to 18362.295 and will stay there until this BS is sorted out.

    Edit*

So i followed the above 2 temporary fix steps again and at this stage it all seems to be working fine. The CPU usage is not getting hammered!

BTW the command to replace the files is...

    the command: cd c:\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy\cache
    xcopy /o /x /e /h /k D:\backup\cache\*

Where (D) in my case was the (C) drive - I just put the created backup (Dir) in the main C (Dir) and then ran the command in admin mode.

Lets hope they fix this proper in their next update.... Still have my fingers crossed that this doesn't break at some point? LOL

I don't understand all of your Cortana problems. For me, Cortana is taking 0% CPU and also has the 'suspend' icon on its name in Task Manager for me.

Mine updated yesterday on my laptop. This morning I noticed my fan was running pretty high. Task Manager showed Cortana utilizing 67% CPU. After about 20 minutes it all went back down to normal. If it does it again this update is getting booted to the curb.

I updated 3 machines 2 are fine 1 which is my actual pc is having the issues with cortana.

But I have run that fix that’s posted on the previous page and it seems to have fixed it for now but I’m always concerned it will revert back to high cpu usage at any time.

Fingers x it stays stable until ms fix this ASAP.
