Explorer crashes sometimes related to what is called a shell extension in context menu, when you right click something in explorer, see choices in context menu, software installed adds more in there, many other reasons this can happen. Cortana search is close to start button, sure not hitting that ?
I was wrong about the search bar for Cortana showing up when I click on the Start Menu. But, every time I open File Explorer, it crashes, pretty much crashes the desktop, and restarts the desktop.

I was bit confused on my answer to, you meant search bar was in start menu when you opened it, not that Cortana was opening.
Explorer.exe crashes as said can be due to what i mentioned, but also some other running program or process, not easy to figure out, use to happen to me in Windows 8.1, i did reinstall, i think was Nero never put it back on, shell extension from Nero.

Have to try a clean boot see if it happens there to http://windowsinstructed.com/clean-boot-windows-windows/

Try safe mode too, maybe easier http://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-bo...-windows-10/#!

I ran a SFC scan and it said that "Windows didn't find any integrity violations".

Wow! I've been speed reading all the pages for the KB3081424 update & not sure if I want to do this or not.

I upgraded from Win7 to Win10 via the download tool on USB & had enough issues I decided to do a reinstall but this time a full clean install. This morning I'm re-installing all my software & noticed that in Windows Update, Defender update had stalled at 50%. So, I manually installed the update by launching Defender, then did a scan. All was good. Now I go back to the Windows Update & see nothing downloading for KB3081424.

Searching this forum, I found a download for KB3081424 at 318Mb & have it downloaded but hesitant to pull the trigger.

Well, no one loves a coward! Off we go...

Hey... no sweat! I wonder of those with issues are primarily upgraders to Win10? As I mentioned, as an upgrade to Win10 I had several issues but none so far after scraping the upgrade & doing a clean install.

I had similar issues. I downloaded from Porthos' post above. Worked for me!

Do you mean you have downloaded the update from the internet or still waiting for Windows Update to do so?

I took your post to mean you're still waiting for Windows Update to download & install. The links Porthos provided is a package download from the internet, not Windows Update. I had to use that because Windows Update was stalled. All went smoothly but some have had issues.
