Microsoft is building a Chromium-powered web browser

The only advantage I can see of Microsoft switching to a Chromium-based browser, is the HTML/CSS support of those browsers. Edge is still behind in development, although, not far behind. Only recently I found something that wasn't supported by edge.

PS: This website is non-commercial. It's just a website where I'm going to share some of my more technical interests on and some tools, like Cryptfolio. It's far from finished, but I needed to put it online for my finishing grade for my Bachelor degree. :) And, I'm also using the Cryptfolio part of the website, already. :)

I only use chrome when a site requires it, else I use FF unless IE works better.

I use Edge as my main browser on home desktop and on all of my windows laptops and tablets. Never had much problems with it on release it was quite barebone with gimmicky features like painting on pages but now its quite feature complete at least for me.
It's sad that Edge didn't get much traction.
Moving new browser to chromium rendering engine means few things but mostly it means that Microsoft is giving up on browsers.
Moving to chromium will cut development cost, as they can stop developing their own edge rendering engine.
So IMHO motivation behind this move is not to get more people to use New Edge with chromium, but to cut cost on product that didn't get enough market share.

Microsoft has been moving to be a cloud service company, for example MS Office, Windows 10, etc. It doesn't really matter what browser people use to connect to these services. Having its own browser rendering engine has just became the latest casualty in the line of disappearing MS software. Eliminating the development workforce for Edge will also look good on the balance-sheet.

On the other hand, having a single browser rendering engine might just be the preference for hackers. Code once, works everywhere...

Edge built on Blink for Android is very smooth!

This is sad news in my humble opinion (even if I don't use Edge). I don't know why people tend to give that much praise to Chromium based browsers. Are they really that good? I doubt it.

I can't understand why Microsoft doesn't leave the browser business to people who can manage it. With IE and now Edge, MS has long claimed that Nirvana is right around the corner. Yet, it somehow never seems to materialize.

Funnily enough I swapped Chromium for Firefox today as it uses less CPU. Chromium in my opinion looks nicer (although perhaps I downloaded the wrong fonts for Firefox) and takes marginally less space (220MB for Firefox vs 178MB for Chromium with their respective pre-requesites). Chromium uses a lot more CPU even for one tab though which is why I changed.

I can't say I notice a difference either way in terms of usability. Edge fails in this regard (my bank refuses my log on with it while other browsers are fine.)

I agree it is sad as the majority of the time Edge is cleaner and less bloated than the alternatives - just doesn't always work.

It's handoff from Android to PC is pretty cool too.
