Change Microsoft Account Details in Administrator Account

My wife has upgraded to Windows 10 and was using her login details with no problem.

When she needed to install a HP Printer Driver, a Microsoft Account was asked for. She couldn't remember her details so we used mine.

Now there is an Administrator account under my name and she doesn't have a login. The computer now seems to be setup for me rather than her.

We now have her Microsoft account details and would like to change the Administrator account to her.

We have tried adding a new login and have changed her to an Administrator, but this creates a whole new profile on the computer which we don't want.

Does anyone know how we can change this please?

Hi Daryl, welcome to the Ten Forums.

It's quite easy in fact, simply switch the account in question first to a local account, then switch back to a Microsoft account, this time using your wife's MS account credentials.

    Tutorials:

Notice that before doing this you need to remove the new additional MS account on the PC, the one you created with her credentials. Windows allows only one user account for each email address, if the new account exists you cannot switch the original administrator account to an MS account using the same email address. Thank you for the reply.

Unfortunately its not quite as easy as that...

I have changed my account to a local one

I then have tried changing it using her details as a microsoft account, the details go in with no problem, I add my old password as requested and the screen goes back to the account admin page.

The option to login as a microsoft account is still there and it still shows my details (name and profile photo). I have tried logging out and back in, but when logging in I only have the option to log back in as my local account.

Did you try this before or after you had removed the new MS account you had created with your wife's MS credentials? If you tried it when that new user account existed, the system would not allow using that MS account email.

    Change my account to local
Change to MS account using wifes credentials

But in the first post you tell that when trying to resolve this issue after you found your wife's MS account credentials, you created a new user account using her MS account.

Did you delete this new user account before trying to switch your original account to an MS account?

    OK.

I've had a few times issues in switching to another MS account from Settings > Accounts Your account page. In those occasions I have had no issues with the same procedure doing it from another places where the switch is possible.

Try first Settings > Accounts > Family & other users, on that page is a link to switch to an MS account, too. Don't ask me how it's possible that basically the same non-working procedure works when using another link to same service, I have not a faintest idea but sometimes it's just like that :).

Another place, another possibility is to install an app from Windows Store. When tried with a local account, you will be notified about the need of an MS account and will be offered to switch then and there.

I tried to find the link in the Friends and Family area but there was no link to switch, only to add a family member or a non-family member.

I had a look in Windows Store and I was still logged in there with my account (as this is where the HP App was downloaded from). I signed out and tried signing back in with the wifes account but got the following error message:

We're sorry, but we weren't able to make this Microsoft account your default account for Windows. Don't worry, we will sign you into this app. If you want to use this account to sign in to Windows, you can set that up in the Accounts section of Settings.

I tried going back to Settings Account and adding the MS Account details but still couldnt (as before)

    Strange.

It looks as if the best alternative would be as follows, subject to me understanding you correctly that you only want one user account and that should be an MS account with your wife's email address:
    • Create a user account to your wife with her MS account email
    • Copy the data from C:\Users\Your_Original_Account to the new account of your wife's (Documents to Documents, Pictures to Pictures and so on)
    • Make your wife's account an administrator account
    • Delete your original account
